calmar 22,768 Posted August 21, 2017 Share Posted August 21, 2017 I mean even if it wasn't a symbol of white supremacism these days, it's still a set of statues dedicated to major figures of a distinctly non-American entity (after all, they split from the union and wanted to be recognized as an independent nation, most specifically by the major powers of Europe) who became non-American because they wanted to keep intact using other human beings as subhuman chattel. The fact that they are censoring history just because they 'don't like it' is so disgusting. The history can be moved to museums. I don't see Germany keeping statues of Hitler erected. The monument isn't there to commemorate the war, they were erected during Jim Crow Era 100 years later to intimidate black people. Also, you learn your history from statues? That's a pretty inefficient way to learn. We have these things called books now (even the internet!), you might want to get out of the stone age into the written history era. It's not just about 'learning', it's about experiencing it in person (as best as possible) so that we won't forget the horrific **** that transpired and the lessons that came with it.
