It works EXACTLY like that though. 69 million people bought tickets to see Spider-Man, while 45 million watched Wonder Woman. It's all on Box Office Mojo for you to see. Counting grosses as they are today and comparing them to movies released 15 years ago is FLAWED AS HELL, because ticket prices are constantly on the rise and there'll be a point in 10 years where a moderately successful romantic comedy with friggin' Scott Eastwood and Anna Faris will have grossed more money than Titanic despite selling like 5 tickets.
