Gagaloo911 12,959
My favorites from BTW tend to change a lot. My fave used to be hair, then was Electric Chapel, then The Edge of Glory, then MTN and now Judas. As of now, here are my Top 5 off BTW: #1- Judas #2- Marry the Night #3- Electric Chapel #4- Highway Unicorn (Road to Love) #5- Government Hooker. Ty3009 232
People on this board tend to cite various factors as reasons why Judas underperformed on the charts. Some people maintain that the religious references did it in. Others say that the early leak was a nail in its coffin. Maybe it's a combination of many things. However, I think that the main reason that Judas did not do that great on the charts is because the verses are so grating and off-putting. I think the religious lyric references and the leak were minor factors. The simple fact is that the general public did not really like the song. The vocals during the verses and the post chorus "JudaaAAAAAASSS, JudAAAAAAAAAaaah"s are SO grating that it comes damn close to ruining the song for me. That's unfortunate because the chorus is probably the strongest on the album. Had the verses been a little more melodic with smoother production and had she dropped the random accent I think it would have been much more appealing. People give Judas crap for having the same structure as Bad Romance but I think that's an element that would have worked in its favor with the general public, not hurt it. *side note* It does REALLY bug me that she repeats the word "baby" twice in the lines of the chorus. "I'm just a holy fool, oh baby he's so cruel but I'm still in love with Judas, baby" is super awkward. I think it would have been better if it was "I'm just a holy fool, can't help it he's so cruel but I'm still in love with Judas, baby".

Disregard 50
There are a lot of songs on the radio that are grating. I don't think it's so cut-and-dry that you can point to a section of the song as its downfall. Judas just had a lot of things working against it. Artifact 0
Firstly, Judas didn't flop. :) Secondly, as you said, many things were working about it's peak in US - early leak, religious controverse (only because of using Judas Iscariot as a metaphor), and maybe because Judas-Judaas-Judas-Judaas-Judas-Judaas-Judas-Gaga part was to loud for the radio (like The niiight - The niiiight end in Marry The Night). But just because Judas didn't really do very well in US doesn't mean it flopped. :P It was a big hit WW. There are a lot of songs on the radio that are grating. I don't think it's so cut-and-dry that you can point to a section of the song as its downfall. Judas just had a lot of things working against it. That song was amazing. I guess it just didn't connect with the people. One of her best tbh. She just didn't have to call it Bad Romance 2.0 Let it be just Judas, she doesn't need to recreate her masterpieces. MonsterofFame 1,779
The hard instrumental and grating vocal effects are what made the song less appealing for me. I prefer the Demo because there's less junk done to her voice. Also, the song had too many parts that didn't fit together well. The chorus was great, but was too bubbly for a dark and tribal song. Also, the bridge feels a bit out of place. Some of the lyrics are a bit dumb too (ear condom, love is like a brick you can....)

This flawless post by this user with such a flawless set explains my thoughts exactly. The religious metaphor is what drove people crazy, among other things. Juan Carlos 0
It didn't underperform imo, it was just expected to do better. The leak, the rush release of Edge of Glory and Hair as a promo single while Judas was still around, and the obvious religious controversy (helped by the fact she intended to release Judas during Easter) were mainly the reasons why it didn't perform as expected, if you ask me. Compliquee 1
The vocals are certainly grungey and distorted on purpose, but I actually love that! Especially the "ah ahs" in the prechorus before "I'll bring him down" and "a king with no crown"-- it's one of my favorite moments on the album. Totally over the top in a wonderfully dark anthemic way.
