It is technically beautiful and intense, but nearly devoid of human emotion, drama, situational and historical background, and characterization. Made me feel like watching a video game with people drowning and dying every second. The 3 narratives are interesting but when it goes all together, it seemed like it didn't pay off. The lack of drama might cost Nolan his Oscar. But it is still one of the better films this year. However, I think Call Me By Your Name and some other movies to be released in awards season will be better. It might win for technical Oscar awards tho.

SPR is not gory. It is realistic. And don't tell me Dunkirk is more impactful than Saving Private Ryan. You don't need to sacrifice reality to honor soldiers. Saving Private Ryan made grown men and grandfathers cry. Haven't heard about crying in Dunkirk.

I think it worked better that way, personally. It's a straight-up, no-nonsense account of what happened at Dunkirk. It's not trying to go for that weepy, Hollywood narrative with characters that you grow emotionally attached to. It's just supposed to show the enormous scope of the Dunkirk situation in a unique, interesting way. That, for me, made it even more emotional and hard-hitting than Saving Private Ryan because I didn't feel manipulated by the screenwriter into feeling a certain way about the characters. When random guys drowned and got burned alive, I had tears in my eyes because that sh!t actually happened to men in real life. You don't need a SPR type of fictional narrative to make it any sadder than it already is.

I very much doubt it will lose Oscar nods/wins. It was simply phenomenal.

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

it's probably nolan's worst movie to date :selena:

it's flawless cinematographically but the plot..... so boring and way too long it would've been much better if they cut 40+ minutes of it

and the three narratives thing is pointless :oprah:

but Hans Zimmer really did that

His worst movie? Batman Begins says hi

Dunkirk was already 1 of his shorter films, being under 2 hours. Cutting 40 mins of it would have made it barely over an hour.

The 3 narratives interestingly told the multiple angles of war intermittently. And showed how each influenced other and came into contact with each other.

The movie was made to be historically accurate, so the "boring plot" was actually factual.

I usually HATE war movies, but when I watched Dunkirk I was really immersed in it and impressed by how much storytelling there was even though there wasn't much dialogue. Also, Harry Styles was really good in this, I didn't know he could act so well, he's really coming for that 'Icon' status.
