gabeoz 7,915 Posted August 16, 2017 Share Posted August 16, 2017 Today, August 15, North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper, calls for the removal of confederate statues in the state. If you do not know, the issue in removing these is that the state currently can't. In a bill signed into law in 2015 by former Governor, Pat McCrory, it was made illegal for the state or any local government to authorize and carry out the removal of historical monuments, including confederate statues. In his statement (linked below), he pleas for the repeal of the law as well as the plea to strike down a bill currently going through the N.C. state congress (passed through the house, now going through senate). This bill would make motorists immune to liability for striking a protester. If this bill was law, it would make motorists like the one in the Charlottesville counter-protest walk free (absolutely disgusting). Here's a snippet of his statement: "It started with a monument, stone and metal, inanimate and yet more provocative now than ever. Charlottesville could have been Raleigh, or Asheboro, or any other city in North Carolina that is home to a Confederate monument. I don’t pretend to know what it’s like for a person of color to pass by one of these monuments and consider that those memorialized in stone and metal did not value my freedom or humanity. Unlike an African-American father, I’ll never have to explain to my daughters why there exists an exalted monument for those who wished to keep her and her ancestors in chains. Some people cling to the belief that the Civil War was fought over states’ rights. But history is not on their side. We cannot continue to glorify a war against the United States of America fought in the defense of slavery. These monuments should come down. Our Civil War history is important, but it belongs in textbooks and museums — not a place of allegiance on our Capitol grounds. And our history must tell the full story, including the subjugation of humans created in God’s image to provide the back-breaking labor that drove the South’s agrarian economy." Gerrymandering rigging the system all over the country and effectively allowing the Republicans to take control of everything. Oh really? I did read that the SC is taking up a gerrymandering case in its upcoming session this winter but I didn't think a ruling was made yet. I also am not holding my breath as it's pretty much said it's okay in the past and with Gorsuch now on the Court I have no hope that will change. This is their ruling for NC: "The Supreme Court struck down two congressional district maps in North Carolina Monday, holding that the state had engaged in an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. The ruling is a victory for the black North Carolina voters who had argued the plans packed African-Americans in districts that already had a high percentage of African-Americans, thus diluting their presence in other districts. As a result, the ruling sends the North Carolina legislature back to the drawing board -- with significant potential implications for the 2018 midterm elections.
