American Muslims Are Less Homophobic Than White Evangelicals

When Donald Trump accepted the Republican nomination for president, it was just weeks after the Pulse nightclub shooting, in which 49 people were killed in a terrorist attack during the Orlando gay club’s Latin night. He decried “Islamic terrorism” and told the convention crowd, “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology.”

Unsurprisingly, after the shooting, many people presented viewpoints in direct contradiction with Trump’s speech. Now there’s new data to back them up. A recent Pew study looking at life for Muslim Americans in the early days of the Trump presidency finds that the group is nearly 20 percent more likely than the general population to say targeting and killing civilians in order to further a cause is never justifiable. 

But what’s perhaps more noteworthy, particularly for Trump’s opponents, is Pew’s finding about Muslim Americans’ attitudes toward the LGBT community. Statistically, they’ve become much more accepting of LGBT people: 52 percent of Muslim Americans now agree that homosexuality should be accepted by society—up from just 27 percent in 2007. And while they are not the most accepting group polled, their views have shifted toward being gay-friendly by a greater margin than any other group in the survey. White evangelical Christians remain the least accepting; the group’s views were comparable to those of Muslim Americans in 2007, with 23 percent of white evangelical Christians saying homosexuality should be accepted by society. Today only 34 percent say the same. It’s also worth highlighting that about 80 percent of white evangelicals who voted backed Trump, according to exit polls.

Progress  I'm hoping other Muslims around the west (and eventually the Middle East/Asia) work towards acceptance and tolerance. I'm proud to see such growth

Of course it's not enough but it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully even more muslims open up in terms of these things. I know many very very open minded muslims so I will never generalize or stereotype and I am very hopeful that there will be progression at least for the muslim diaspora living in the west.

I've only watched a little bit so far but I'm glad that people can be civil about this and not just yell at each other. I think that's important even if I don't agree with his views.

So it's good that U.S muslims are rapidly becoming less homophobic than ten years ago and it's helpful to know that scare tactics from the right that paint U.S muslims as homophobic and as a group who pose a significant threat to LGBT people are demonstrably false

You don't have to like religion to see that this is clearly a positive trend when it comes to LGBT acceptance

Just finished, thanks for posting. It was an interesting debate. I think that these are the types of discussions that people need to have on most controversial topics so that why people can see where others are coming from instead of labling someone as a bad person and yelling at them.

Of course not but if 52% of Muslims are accepting of homosexuality it's hardly as if they are trying to bring 'Sharia Law' into the country and execute gay people  

It's a pretty significant rise in acceptance which is extremely positive and shows that muslim people can fit into U.S society and that LGBT people are being more accepted as a whole.

27% - 52% is a major shift. Even more impressive is the rise seen in muslims that indicate religion is 'very important'. They used to be the least tolerant at 19% and now they are nearly at 50%.
