(CNN) - A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his brother during a game of 'cops and robbers' when, police say, he pointed a rifle he didn't know was loaded.

The incident happened Tuesday at a rural home in Loganville in Wisconsin's Sauk County.

The boy was playing with his 14-year-old brother and another child. They were toying with a rifle that had the magazine removed but, unbeknownst to the boy, still had a round in the chamber, the sheriff's office said.

When the boy pulled the trigger, the bullet struck his older brother in the chest. He died at the scene.

Nearly 1,300 children died annually from gun-related injuries in the US, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics -- which looked at deaths from 2012 to 2014. Boys account for 82% of all child firearm deaths, the study found.

this is seriously so horrible...

ut why was he playing with a real rifle in the first place (loaded or not) ill admit i had nerf guns and water guns when i was younger but the fact that there was a "real" gun that was easy access to the children is just wrong!

if parents want to have weapons in their house thats on them but they should not have it accessible to anyone in the house but them!

poor family, may he rest in peace :S

Why was he playing with a real gun :duck: you never EVER play or point guns at people. Doesn't matter if you know its not loaded.

Hands up to the sky, I'm about to fly!

Well if someone is going to have a gun in their house with kids around they should definitely make sure that the kids cant reach it, they should lock it away or something. They also need to make it very clear to the kid that guns are not in any way toys and that it is a very serious matter. This seems like a lack of the parents educating the kid on gun safety. This still sucks though :(

Believe me, they must have tried. My grandma has a riffle, and although it has no bullets and magazine, she doesn't want my little brothers carrying it around and she keeps it hidden in the closet. They still go look for it to play (ofc we discover but still). Probably the 14 year old thought "oh it's no danger it has no magazine" and let the boy go around carrying it :(

If you have a gun in the house, you should have a gun safe...period. (Especially if you have children!)
