Embryo DNA edited to get rid of disease

Scientists have, for the first time, successfully freed embryos of a piece of faulty DNA that causes deadly heart disease to run in families.

It potentially opens the door to preventing 10,000 disorders that are passed down the generations.

The US and South Korean team allowed the embryos to develop for five days before stopping the experiment.

The study hints at the future of medicine, but also provokes deep questions about what is morally right.

Science is going through a golden age in editing DNA thanks to a new technology called Crispr, named breakthrough of the year in just 2015.

This is genuinely amazing and leaves me a little teary eyed because my best friend worked on similar research through grad-school. She has a mitochondrial DNA issue that causes disease inherited directly from her mother and they're so hard to treat. While this isn't the exact procedure one would do for that particular form of gene therapy, it's still a very similar premise and offers so much hope for the future. It just makes me really happy to see so much progress in that field anf finally getting some tangible data that can be used to help so many people :sara:

I hope I had this tech back when I was born. People don't need to suffer from what I have been through, it's not fun to have undergone 8 surgeries just in the first few years of your life.

I just graduated from a biotech program and the amount of research and trials going on right now to cure genetic diseases are incredible. :golfclap:

U mean do the procedure on 100 Trillion cells???

That will be 100 Trillion years and at $10,000 per cell, $10 quadrillion dollars...

Oh wait, the entire world economy  and entire human race life-span added together cannot...

Im joking... im sure eventually another technique could do an entire body... but probably not in our lifetimes!
