He was born on August 3, 1926, in Astoria, New York to an Italian-American family. Tony began singing for money at age 13 (), performing as a singing waiter in several Italian restaurants around his native Queens. He attended an art school but dropped out at the age of 16 to pursue a professional singing career. His first big hit was a ballad called "Because of You" which reached number one on the pop charts in 1951 and stayed there for ten weeks. Bennett experienced a lot of success during the 50s and the 60s but soon his popularity waned as younger fans turned to rock music. However, he managed to rebound by the 1990s through increased exposure and an acclaimed MTV Unplugged appearance. Tony Bennett has sold over 50 million records worldwide. Along with his 19 Grammy Award wins, he has been honored by the Kennedy Center and the United Nations.
