Was Sonja Joanne's friend?

Sicne Gaga met Sonja in her early 20s (she stated that in her goodbye letter) and Joanne died before Gaga was born and Sonja was ina Gaga's age category, there's no way they met. The way I look at the sentence is that it is a metaphor for Sonja going through similar things Joanne went. They were both very ill and both very loved by their families and friends, and both were fighting the disease  they struggled with. So I guess the sentence for me means that they were very familiar and also I closure for Gaga cause she believes that if Sonja loses her fight Joanne will be waiting for her in the heaven as her friend. But especially the second part saying tough girls on the mend is telling me that she is drawing comparisons between them being strong fighters and not giving up.
