babs 5,093 Posted July 31, 2017 Share Posted July 31, 2017 As of this hour, 15 people have already died today in what has been one of the most violent "electoral" days in modern venezuelan history. Today July 30th was the set day for the voting of an 545-member constituent assembly, proposed by president Nicolas Maduro. Said assembly has been deemed by many as "ilegitimate" and "Fraudulent" given the fact that venezuelan constitution states that an constituent assembly must be carried out by the people, not the president. Many believe that the results of this constituent assembly will give Nicolas Maduro and the chavista regime ilimited power over what they can do in regards to the ruling of the land. Since the morning, people have gone out to the streets to protest the assembly vote, backed up by various opposition leaders, and have been met with repression from the military forces, causing the unfortunate deaths 14 american countries have already said so far that they will not recognize the result of this assembly, between those included Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Perú and Brasil. This constituent assembly comes after the US froze the accounts and visas of 13 venezuelan functionaries this week, disagreeing with the "anti-democratic" behavior of the venezuelan government concerning the constituent and the repression by military forces over the last 120 days of antigovernment protest in Venezuela, which have left more than a 100 dead protesting and non-protesting civilians. This is the reason why I had to leave my country. I used to be one of these protesting people and the goverment/police/military will make your life impossible when they know you are against the government. Most of these protests are very quiet and pacific until the repression comes around, and I've seen many friends and colleagues dead, wounded or imprisoned because of this. In a nutshell, the chavista government has been leading the country since 1999 starting with Chavez and then followed by Maduro after the former's death. Over the course of that time: - Chavez modified a law so he (and any president after him) could be elected and be in power for as long as they pleased. - The country has gained crazy inflation since the government keeps on spending money and then try to cover it all up by printing more money (geniuses) and in top of that they expropriate any company or property they feel like taking over, while the rest of the private market goes into bankrupcy, flee the country of just simply struggle to keep up with the changes in the economy, which has lead to shortages in all sorts of food and 1st necessity products such as dough, toilet paper, medications, rice, milk, etc. - Media outlets get silenced and censored (There's even a relatively new law for that, popularly referred as "ley mordaza") by the government if they are not ok with the things they say (against the goverment and the countries situation obvs) - Nepotism is a HUGE characteristic of this situation. All powers are sided by the government (which is inconstitutional), except by the national assembly (congress). However, this would change today with the realization of the constituent. Also, the government as of lately has attributed a lot of the duties which are supposed to be handled by the assembly to the supreme court (because that makes sense) - The country depended a lot on the oil market (Venezuela has one of the biggest oil reserves in the world, if not the biggest). The only company that handles the oil in Venezuela is owned by the government. You know the rest - Chavez, Maduro, their families and many functionaries have been related to the drug market and carteles. Reason why these people are super rich but a lot of them have had their banks account frozen in different countries and some have even been imprisoned. I have only looked briefly into Chavez's 1999 campaign but I think his platform was mostly anti-government, anti-corruption. Yet look at his legacy now This is why it's important to vote for the best leaders, people. Disastrous consequences may happen. Don't fall for a demagogue. I think worldwide awareness is super important in this situation, so more people from the outside can lend a helping hand, the most we can do from within is exercise our protest speech and rebel against the government. If this somehow could turn into an issue of more worlwide relevance, international organisms could get their hand on this and help the venezuelan people. Governments and the international market would stop dealing with Venezuela which would lead to a bigger crisis and something would have to give in. Sadly there are still people in Venezuela (very few as of now though) which somehow believe in this government which is the problem with these sort of situations, they find their way into people's brains and make them blind to the important issues, and the government managed to do this not only with the people from the poorest parts of the country, but most importantly the military (you can see an example of that in the videos above). it's not strange to go around the streets of vzla sometimes and hearing chavista people say that they don't care if they starve or die as long as the chavista regime is still in power. I know I've experienced that sort of speech many times. But the thing is, we do need these people. Everyone needs to raise their fist and rebel against the government so we can really break it. I really dont understand Poor people of Venezuela, they wont stop fighting eventhough the government has killed so many. This topic really needs international attention, and something MUST be done, who cares that its an independant country? Someone save this people and state.
