Sen. McCain, Collins, Murkowski Kill Obamacare Repeal Bill

The Senate has dealt a devastating setback to Republican efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, defeating a GOP "skinny repeal" bill early Friday morning. 

Sens. John McCain, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined with Democrats to oppose the measure, a major blow to President Donald Trump and the Republican congressional agenda.

McCain was the one vote that killed the bill. If he voted yes, Obamacare would have been repealed after the House Of Reps. passed the Skinny Repeal through.

Actually, all three republican votes killed the bill equally...

While grateful to McCain, there has been such a disproportionate amount of praise for him. Murkowski and Collins deserve just as much credit, if not more due to their continued persistence to vote for a bill that went un-debated and would strip healthcare from the constituents.

Yes they do but they were already expected to vote no. McCain was expected to vote yes. If he voted yes, the bill would have went through but he shocked everyone and voted no.

Again, not sure we should single him out with praise because his two colleagues made their votes clear through previous actions, while McCain did not until the final moment...

Not trying to take this away, but I refuse to say he tipped the scale alone. Murkowski, Collins, and McCain did so together with their Democratic colleagues.

More republicans voted yes to repeal this time. On Tuesday, the vote was a total repeal that would replace it with a more conservative version which failed. On Wednesday, it was a partial repeal that also failed. Moderate republicans were opposed to the Medicaid expansion cuts and a couple conservative republicans felt the bill didn't go far enough. The vote today would only remove a few provisions, hence "skinny repeal," and it failed by three votes. My guess is that more voted yes simply because this bill's purpose isn't to create a new law but just continue moving forward with the debate. Many republican senators hope to pass this in order to get it sent to the house in the hopes of them passing it. Some, however, don't want the House to immediately pass it and instead form a joint conference between the two chambers to draft a new and better version of the law. Basically, if republicans can't even agree to repeal the one part of Obamacare they don't like, the individual and employer mandates, then it's a sign that Obamacare isn't going anywhere, minus a couple tweaks here and there.
