111 N.F.L. Brains.
All but One Had Brain Damage.

A neuropathologist examined the brains of 111 N.F.L. players — and found 110 had C.T.E., the degenerative disease linked to repeated blows to the head.

Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist, has examined the brains of 202 deceased football players. A broad survey of her findings was published on Tuesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Of the 202 players, 111 of them played in the N.F.L. — and 110 of those were found to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., the degenerative disease believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head.

C.T.E. causes myriad symptoms, including memory loss, confusion, depression and dementia. The problems can arise years after the blows to the head have stopped.

The brains here are from players who died as young as 23 and as old as 89. And they are from every position on the field — quarterbacks, running backs and linebackers, and even a place-kicker and a punter.

They are from players you have never heard of and players, like Ken Stabler, who are enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Some of the brains cannot be publicly identified, per the families’ wishes.

There's nothing harder for people to do than admit they were fooled.

And yet the League says there isn't a problem. The fans also don't care. Sadly.

one thing,

these studies are carried out on former players who's families or they themselves have reported symptoms of CTE. so its not like they just pulled random brains fro a pile of dead NFL players, the players brains examined were examined BECAUSE they had symptoms during life. the 110 out of 111 number is to be expected with how they go about obtaining the brains. if you picked players brains at random then the percentage of them that are found to have CTE would be a lot lower.

that being said, this is still a huge issue that the NFL ignores. its hard

football is such a fun sport. boys and girls bond over the game of football in more ways than one. they play it and talk about it a lot i mean plenty of friendships are started because a shared interest in sports and it is an escape or outlet to vent some natural aggression that is innate in especially men.

the other thing is that it gets poor kids out of the ghetto and gives them a chance to get educated. there is no guarantee that a kid who plays ball will one day make it to the NFL, but it has helped so many kids from poor communities get an education through college sports i mean there are 53 men on a roster and there are hundreds of colleges that need those rosters filled. we all know about the top division schools and all, but there are lower ranked colleges that also fill their rosters with kids who get there through their athletic abilities.

NFL players are always giving back to the communities they come from and you can probably find more than one charity that every NFL team participates in or even runs themselves. these guys are heroes that people look up to and serve as examples of hard work and determination can pay off and get you out of these ****ed up environments.

also the production of football games and the economic impact for he cities that have teams is huge from tickets sold and just the amount of people events draw that keep a lot of people in business and a lot of families fed.

sorry :emma: i'm just a football loving man that doesnt want to see this glorious violence pushed aside because of these head injuries. something needs to be done but you will not take away our beloved football. :grr: lol. at least in my lifetime i know it wont go anywhere. too much money behind the sport at this point

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

TBH, i mostly think it is because of the helmets. There have been multiple studies in boxing (where people regularly take heavy blows to the head, insert a that's what she said joke here), where they found out that due to the head basically bouncing around in the protective gear even just minimally, there's a dramatically increased risk for concussions and brain damage than without a helmet

There are PLENTY of other sports/activities that help people from poor communities :poot:

Idk, I understand why people like it BUT it's never bad to criticize it and make it safer.
