benKo 3,362 Posted July 23, 2017 Share Posted July 23, 2017 They are as emblematic of Rome as the Colosseum, but the city's constantly flowing, traditional water fountains are to be turned off as weeks of unseasonably high temperatures and a lack of rain have left vast areas of Italy suffering from drought. The free-standing, cylindrical fountains, nicknamed “nasoni” or big noses, normally dispense water day and night, giving relief to parched Romans and tourists alike. There are 2,800 of them, scattered in piazzas and street corners across the capital. But as of Monday, the city authorities will start turning them off to conserve water. Rome relies on Lake Bracciano, a volcanic lake 30km northwest of the city in Lazio, where the water level has sunk by nearly 1.5m because of the lack of rain, for about 10 per cent of its water supply. “There will be negative consequences for everyone,” said Carlo Rienzi, the president of Codacons, a consumers’ rights organisation. “Turning off the fountains will force tourists and citizens to buy bottles of water in bars and shops and prices will no doubt be hiked up.
