StrawberryBlond 14,371
Taylor Swift gets a #1 album in the UK? You could have knocked me down with a feather. How do Taylor's sales go from what they once were to that? She had a big hit single with Love Story which went to #2 and was in the charts for many weeks and that wasn't enough to get a #1 album and her last album completely flopped. WANEGBT was one of the biggest hits she's ever had in the UK (well, it's only her second hit) but I still didn't think that would translate into album sales. Did her performance on XF really help that much? All I can say is, most of the people who bought it can't have listened to it online before buying it and bought it on the strength of the lead single. They likely thought it was going to be a great, fun pop album when it's really the dullest, drearist, most boring pop album with touches of country that a UK audience just will not be feeling. There's going to be so many disgruntled customers after this. I have no doubt that her sales will plummet next week, but still...this is bizarre. I can't use the "For all her US success, Taylor's never had a UK #1 album" reasoning whenever her deluded fans boast about how she's such a worldwide star. I wonder if this means she'll be doing a proper UK tour instead of about three arena dates with less than 12,000 tickets available, like she usually does? She's lined up to perform at quite a few fields and stadiums in the US already. Hopefully this'll give Gaga the push to try for the same thing with her next tour. In other news, I can't believe Ellie's album is already at #19. It's typical that her better album is the one that people aren't buying into.
Sexxx 5,544
Taylor's really caught people's attention in GB. It's annoying acutally :toofunny:

craig 680
Taylor's last album had a similar opening UK week as Bionic ... so it only took a few more sales and weak competition to accomplish what Britney has never done. Official Chart Company referred to Swift as a "former country singer" in their write-up. http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/us-pop-princess-taylor-swift-secures-first-uk-number-1-album-1671/

craig 680
I hear it's a close album race so far this week, with Kylie only 600 copies behind Calvin Harris as of today.

I know I'm likely in the minority here, but I really hope Kylie gets that #1. I don't know if she'll have a chance for that next week, what with Robbie Williams and JLS releasing their albums. But #2 would be amazing, especially considering the nature of the album and how Kylie hasn't been popular in the UK for a long, long time. Its release date is kinda weird, though, as this kind of album screams "winter/Christmas release" and it might have had a better chance of #1 if she'd waited until that time. I have to say, I'm really impressed with it. It's the perfect soundtrack for classy dinner parties. I wasn't keen on the original versions of some of these songs, but they sound heavenly presented this way. And I was pleasantly surprised at how good her voice was. Looks like her vocals have remained under-rated all these years. Ok, she's still not the best vocalist, but she sure sounds pretty, seductive and controlled.
