Louis Armstrong was 66 years old when he topped the chart with What A Wonderful World/Cabaret in 1968. No other recording artist has had a solo number one at that age - though a cursory glance at iTunes' chart earlier in the week might have raised hopes that David Bowie would do so with his surprise single, Where Are We Now?, which was released on Tuesday to mark his 66th birthday.

Later, it appeared as though the single wouldn't chart at all, with OCC citing difficulties in identifying 'a la carte' sales of the track from those purchased as part of Bowie's upcoming album, The Next Day but made available immediately. Happily, the matter was resolved, and with 30,489 sales NOT logged as part of an album purchase, the track debuts at number six, becoming Bowie's first Top 10 single since Jump The Say reached number nine in 1993, and his highest charting single since Absolute Beginners reached number two in 1986.

If Bowie's record company had instead offered buyers of Where Are We Now a 99p discount on the album, and delivered the single now and the entire album at a later date, each and every sale of Where Are We Now would have been counted, and it may have charted higher than number six, though it absolutely would not have been number one.

Thank goodness.

Eek! I'm so excited to see the possibility of Gaga having a UK #1 again. She was honestly robbed with Born This Way and more-so with The Edge of Glory.

It's such an exciting time to be a Gaga fan again! I wish her every success with this album campaign.

Even though Gaga hasn't got full week sales does she still have a chance of #1 this week ? :O

Applause is coming up in itunes for me now :D

Of course, we just have to see how well it performs once it starts to show up on iTunes/Kworb
