Melech 9,900
"MPs on the predominantly Catholic island of Malta have voted to legalise same-sex marriage. In a vote passed by 66-1, Malta’s parliament approved legislation replacing the traditional "you are now husband and wife" declaration in civil ceremonies with "you are now spouses”. The sole MP who voted against the change said he did so because of his faith. "A Christian politician cannot leave his conscience outside the door" when he enters parliament, Edwin Vassallo said. It follows the passage of a bill in 2014 that granted gay couples in Malta the right to civil partnerships. Adoption by same-sex couples has also been legal since that date, although abortion remains banned. Last year, the number of exclusively civil marriages eclipsed the number of church weddings for the first time. The move is further evidence of Malta's transformation from a once-conservative nation of about 440,000 people, where divorce was illegal until 2011. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said it would be "discriminatory" to have separate laws for mixed and same-sex couples. The amendments to existing laws replace references to "husband and wife" with the gender-neutral term "spouse"." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/malta-gay-marriage-same-sex-vote-passes-approval-a7838121.html

I can't wrap my mind around it. Like it is so stupid. I also read abortion is completely illegal in Malta. That's dumb as ****, what if the woman was raped? Pro-life activists are pretty much misogynists behind a mask
Bye 3,947
I'm so proud of my country It might be good to know that we had Civil Unions (came into law in 2014) and were equal to marriage in every way including adoption rights, so this was mostly a name change, but sorely needed for full equality. 6 minutes ago, Simon said: their abortion rights though Give us a break on that front for the moment Divorce was not legal till 2011! Civil Unions were introduced in 2014! We were first to introduce one of the most comprehensive Gender Identity laws even before some Scandinavian countries in 2015, and now we have Equal Marriage. All this in less than a decade. We'll get to abortion one day but probably we'll first decriminalise drugs and then introduce euthanasia before we have abortion. We're a country obsessed with children (god knows why....so don't ask me).
