Is Gaga the music industry's FarmVille?

If you went on Facebook in the late 2000's, you probably would have about this game called FarmVille. FarmVille is a farming simulation game launched in 2009 where users would complete certain tasks such as plowing land, planting, growing, and harvesting crops, harvesting trees and raising livestock. It grew extremely popular as users would spread word of the game's existence around since sending notifications to your friends would allow you to improve your farm more quickly, using their help as farmhands or by gaining rewards from helping them. 

 

Likewise, if you went on Facebook in the late 2000's, the name Lady Gaga was everywhere. As the mystique of an artist making pop music and bringing shock-value and controversy back into a seemingly plateauing pop scene intrigued many, Gaga also grew extremely popular on Facebook around 2009 (around the same time as the VMA performance), as users would spread word of her existence on Facebook to become the only name of an individual to be included in Facebook's Top Status Trends of 2009.

A list by TIME documenting the Top 10 of Everything of 2009 is a good example of Gaga's and Farmville's impact as Farmville takes #2 of their "Top 10 Facebook Stories of 2009" list and Gaga is included under 3 different lists of that year (Top 10 Albums of 2009, Top 10 Fashion Faux Pas of 2009, and Top 10 Fashion Moments of 2009).

 

   

After its launch on Facebook in 2009, FarmVille became the most popular game on the site, and held that position for over two years. It got so popular at one point in that it had more monthly active users (MAU) than all of Twitter.

 

Similarly, around this time, Gaga became the first living person to have the most Facebook fans (behind Michael Jackson) and eventually, came to become the artist with the most Facebook fans.

 

Starting after 2011, the game began experiencing a considerable decline in popularity and by May 2012, the game was ranked as the seventh most popular Facebook game.

Gaga was still popular in 2011 with the release of Born This Way, but the decline also started to show as Gaga quickly became, to some, overrated and overexposed. By late 2012, Gaga had fallen to #4 in terms of artists with the most fans on Facebook.

In early 2013, Gaga faced several instances of decline in popularity as she had to cancel the BTWB early, went missing from the public eye to recover for her hip surgery, and spent the next year recording her next album, ARTPOP, which in turn commercially underperformed in terms of her previous albums.

As of April 30, 2016, Farmville's rank had fallen to the 110th most popular Facebook game by daily active users, with only its most devout fans still playing the game. And as of now, Gaga is #31 in the list of most liked Facebook pages, remaining somewhat stagnant in growth (increasing in 8 million fans between the span of 5 years).

Interesting enough, between ARTPOP and Joanne, Gaga left the Internet and instead of playing Farmville on the computer, she lived Farmville in real life. 

Zynga, the creators of the game Farmville, was reached out for comment. A representative of Zygna declined to comment and blocked me from further communication from the company.
