Use the guns as much as possible when they aren't in range. Once they're close enough (not too close) combo them with the sword, but run as soon as they're about to attack. Spoiler WHAT THE HELL WITH THE DARK REALM I was so shocked but also it made sense because so many characters hadn’t been unlocked from World of Light. I'm using it with Kirby in WOL and with Bayonetta for the board and it made things so easy so far.. I'm waiting for metal mario right now to add to the set.
