101~ shot, 15 killed during violent Fourth of July weekend in Chicago

CHICAGO -- The city of Chicago flooded the streets with 1,000 extra police officers during the Independence Day weekend. But they could not stop an eruption of gun violence.

The extra-long holiday weekend was the bloodiest in recent years. At least 101 people were shot, nearly half in the last 12 hours of July Fourth. To give you a sense of the enormity of that number, that's the amount of passengers that can fill most regional airplanes. At least 15 people were killed.

To see the violence for ourselves, CBS News spent Tuesday night with Tim White, a former gang leader who now works to stop violence in the streets.

"We're on our way to a murder scene," White said. "We gotta turn those lights on."

So sad what is going on in Chicago The city now has the greatest homicide rate in the entire United States. People get shot in that city almost everyday, praying it gets better for the people and families there

USA is very safe. Crime is down as well as violence, unfortunately Chicago remains the top homicide city in the entire country.

Most of these shootings happen in a couple of really bad neighborhoods. 

If you're wanting to visit Chicago, the touristy areas are generally very safe. I've never felt afraid to stroll about the city during the day. (I would probably avoid the loop area after nightfall, but that's just me)

Just be alert! It's a terrible problem, but for the most part the problem is localized to those few neighborhoods. (Englewood, South Shore etc. The area by University of Chicago is not all that great )

Chicago has strict laws on gun violence. It's a little more complex than that.

This is why I stayed inside for the 4th of July with friends. It happens everyday in the neighborhood I live in but even more so durin the hot summer months.

Gangs + culture are a large part of this problem. 

Chicago is beyond help by traditional manners. They have gun laws. 

Anyone who pretends this is simple, including the president who thinks sending in feds will help is wrong. 

This needs to be fixed at the root. Education, more opportunity, this generation is lost. It needs to start with the kids.

Its not only the gun laws that need to be fixed. In the 80s/90s Reagan shut down and stopped funding mental institutions which I think has exponentially made America worse. To my knowledge Idt a law has ever been brought up to try to open these places back up. Also education needs to be stopped putting on the back burner. Its too important for people to just disregard it. There should be a strict governmental law on how education is handled and plans to make schools better.
