St. Louis Minimum Wage Lowered

"If you thought the minimum wage only moved in one direction, then Missouri Republicans have a surprise for you.

After St. Louis leaders raised the wage floor for workers within city limits, the state GOP recently passed what’s known as a statewide “preemption” law, forbidding localities from taking such matters into their own hands. On Friday, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) said he would let the law go into effect, thereby barring cities and counties from setting a minimum wage higher than the state level.

For low-wage earners in St. Louis itself, the new law will have a startling consequence: It will actually push the minimum wage back down, from the city-approved $10 per hour to the state-approved $7.70. The downgrade is slated to take effect on Aug. 28..."

Any legislator who votes for the minimum wage to be lowered should be forced to have their salaries changed to minimum wage

You cannot live off of $7.70 an hour  You just can't  Not unless you run yourself into the ground working 50-60 hours a week, take overtime, never get sick, and never have an emergency stop you from attending work.

I do think $7/h is too low but then again many ppl want it too high

 

minimum wage is suppostu be the wage for starter and low skilled jobs... it is not a job people should get comfortable and "make a living" on

 

When i see a 40 year old working at a grocery store that works there year after year I have to ask... how hard has he tried in life? Options exist. In this economy it isnt always easy to get something better, but eventually if your trying you should be able to (unless you have very specific circumstances preventing you from doing so)

I think $9/h to $10/h (US Dollars) is pretty good balance depending where you live and the economics of that area

I think $9/h to $10/h (US Dollars) is pretty good balance depending where you live and the economics of that area

I agree with the 2014 $10.10 proposal. It would incrementally raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 over the next 3 years lifting millions of workers out of poverty and relying less on government assistance. Walmart workers make so little that tax payers pay billions just so their workers go on governmental assistance because Walmart doesn't pay them enough. Millions of workers would also have more income to spend and it would increase GDP and business profit. Plus if a single payer system is implemented, average families would pay around 50% less in yearly healthcare spending, which means even more money for families to spend and to lift them out of poverty and off of food stamps/welfare programs. I think the implementation of single payer, increased minimum wage, investing in education/affordable college, and infrastructure projects simultaneously would really get the USA out of a 1%-2% GDP and lift it to 3%-4%, I think even higher and the economy would be doing great. Plus regulating big banks and wall street would even be better.

Here in Ontario they are raising it to $15/h it just passed (About $11/h In US Dollars)

 

I think $9 to $11 (US) is a good range. Its high enough that people are not being absolutely taken advantage of and used as slaves. And it would help decrease food stamp and welfare dependancy.

 

But its not so high that people get comfortable in those jobs and dont try to get something better. Its also not so high as to bankrupt businesses because of labor being too costly.

 

A decent minimum wage (within reason) has been shown to increase productivity as it encourages companies to make the most out of their labor and find efficiencies!!! They will not wish to pass on ALL higher costs to customers due to nature of competition and will try to offset some of the higher costs by being more efficient with each worker!

 

While innitially higher productivity increases unemployment temporarily, the higher comsumption power of the ones who kept their hours, and the higher economic output per worker offsets the loss after a little while and everyone is better off long term!
