Do you find the vocals on Joanne off-putting?

I’ve been kind of fighting a battle with this album for quite a while now and it’s frustrating me more and more with each listen.

The music is excellent on this album. The melodies, lyrics, production are all A1 to me. But it’s Gaga’s insanely raw, screamy and in some cases, forced vocals which really don’t make the album the kind of album I can have in the background when I’m going about my everyday activities :wtfga:

Maybe it’s the main reason that the instrumentals are my favourite part of the album :air:

what do y’all think? Do the loud vocals make it a little less pleasant for you to listen to on a regular basis?

Do you think the music would be even a step better if Gaga’s vocals we’re more subtle (e.g the vocals on the first chorus of Joanne the song (godly as ****

Idk, maybe they take your attention if they're playing in the background when you're doing something, but only in a good way for me. I just always find myself jamming to the album.

Well I remember being a little taken aback the first listen. I definitely wasn't sure. By the second listen I was in love. It has a very unconstrained and loud vocal form that reminds me of Stevie Nicks' newer stuff. Like, not overly polished and sort of rough and free?

Her live vocals on Million Reasons are always better imo

The studio version is kinda forced and unnatural

I know where you're coming from, but on the flipside I kind of like how old-school it all is, how she wrote the lyrics on that precious typewriter, how the vocals are first takes and undoubtedly raw. It just projects an unbelievable amount of emotion and grit that would maybe be different if more processed, and I think I prefer it this way. Joanne's just one facet, one gem among Gaga's discography anyway.

Honestly, I think their refreshing. At the time she came out with the record I was really sick of all the autotuned bullshit music we get nowadays. I was so happy she decided to go without it and with pure raw emotional husky vocals.

Yes, thats the main reason why I don't like the album much. She should have tuned her voice just a bit. One thing I didn't like ARTPOP was how over-produced her vocals were so it should be in between. Her voice on most of Joanne reminds me of her dope voice and I can't stand that song :neyde:

On the title track verses, yes :toofunny: Also, she really puts on an accent for MR. other than that, I like her vocals more on here than ARTPOP or BTW.

To be honest, think this can be said about a lot of her songs. She sounds better live a lot of the time. Marry The Night is a good example.

the main reason why I love Joanne is because of how raw and true her vocals sound

It sounds raw and untouched vocals. I don't mind it sometimes but she could be "shrill" when she belted like on DIC and I hate the bridge because of that.:saladga:  Also Florence low key out sang her on hey girl :reductive:

It works in some cases for me, is a bit difficult in others. I wish Diamond Heart hadn't been quite so belted, even though it is a more energetic song. I also feel the same way about the chorus of A-Yo and definitely Perfect Illusion, where the mixing and vocals really were not, in my opinion, done correctly. The instrumental is so throwback and gorgeous, but you couldn't hear half of it through the terrible mixing on the vocals. Those little 90's bells all throughout the song? Gone. John Wayne and the peak in DIC, though, sound great. Plus, that moment in the work tape of Angel Down where she literally screeches 'FOOLISH AND WEAKER' is ****ing badass.
