Saying banning it is to combat extremism is not a reason good enough to take away someone's freedom - some may do it freely. Turkey is the only muslim country were gay sex isn't illegal and they're not going any further than that, the rest you might not get punished by the state but by villagers likely beating you up to death. Both sides of the coin, "pro-burqa" and "anti-burqa" are normally misplaced anger. You can't ban the clothing but we, as a society, need to place the decision into women's hands and let men (religious or not, for the burqa or not) that they can not dictate what women wear. I am agnostic, I look around and find it hard to believe that there is a God but I like to think there is one and they would not hold it against me for being different when I am not hurting anyone. I mean men and women praying next to each other isn't advisable in Islam. Islam says women better stay home rather than going to mosque, let alone praying next to men.
