Morphine Prince 109,645
A high-profile effort to establish a single-payer healthcare system in California sputtered on Friday when Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) decided to shelve the proposal. Rendon announced late Friday afternoon that the bill, SB 562 by state Sens. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), would not advance to a policy hearing in his house, dampening the measure’s prospect for swift passage this year. “SB 562 was sent to the Assembly woefully incomplete,” Rendon said in a statement. “Even senators who voted for SB 562 noted there are potentially fatal flaws in the bill, including the fact it does not address many serious issues, such as financing, delivery of care, cost controls, or the realities of needed action by the Trump Administration and voters to make SB 562 a genuine piece of legislation.” Rendon took pains to note that his action does not kill the bill entirely — because it is the first year of a two-year session, it could be revived next year. But the move is nonetheless a major setback for legislation that has electrified the Democratic party’s progressive flank. The California Nurses Assn., the bill's sponsors and the state's most vocal advocates for single-payer, blasted Rendon's decision as "cowardly." "Acting in secret in the interests of the profiteering insurance companies late Friday afternoon abandons all those people already threatened by Congress and the Trump administration," Deborah Burger, the union's co-president, said in a statement. I think the key is discovering what is keeping the birth of new healthcare companies from happening and taking out the specific regulations that prevent it. "The more, the merrier" is a perfect way to describe capitalistic practices. When the control is in the consumer's hands, the businesses are forced to bend over backwards to the will of the people, thus improving prices. The key to a good government is the concept of laissez faire, which is a hands off style of rule. Government should exist to protect the general welfare of the people, but regulating everything is too far and leads to a broken economy that ultimately worsens the burden on the people. The government should incentivize, not regulate. If someone was pointing a gun at your head and telling you to do what they say, but you could choose to just leave the area instead, would you not leave? Of course you would. Now, if they were instead offering you some sort of incentive to do what they say instead of threatening you, you would likely choose to stay instead of leave as long as it's all reasonable. Incentivize positive company actions instead of forcing them out of the country through regulation. 2. Allow smaller and cheaper businesses to rise and compete, the older companies failing due to the public not being willing or able to pay the high expenses. 3. Pre-Obama was hardly true capitalism. We've hardly had true capitalism in this country. 4. More businesses mean cheaper prices. Many companies succeed because they offer better, fairer prices and often better products when up against larger businesses. I'm not totally against regulation, there needs to be some. Harmful, cancerous substances need to be banned. Allergens should have to be listed. Hey, that's called protecting the general welfare of the people. Let's try some true capitalism for a while. If a truly good government is there then it should know when to step in and when not to.

Taking proper precautions to protect the people is necessary even in a purely capitalistic system, so I do think there always needs to be some sort of safety net. But this isn't it. Whatever can be done to ensure that small business insurance companies rise up and put the power in the bread and butter people of America will pay off long term. I don't think anyone should die due to a lack of healthcare. But socialized medicine is like repairing a hole in the ship with a 2 ton lead block. Eventually it's going to start sinking. California already has massively high taxes and the largest homeless population in the United States. The cost of living is unbelievable and this is because the government takes most of their money. What do you think causes all these problems? It couldn't be high taxes, could it? And what do you think single payer healthcare is going to do? Lower taxes? Hardly. California will sink far before rising sea levels make it Just look how much money you'd have to make to afford a two bedroom apartment in California. Then look at it in New York. There's a reason people leave these areas; the cost of living is too high. Ironically only the rich will be able to afford to live there. And no, raising the minimum wage eight dollars wouldn't be enough. Raising it eighteen dollars wouldn't be enough. This will all catch up to these democrat run states and cities and it isn't going to be pretty. Don't get me wrong, Republicans can be just as bad. It's just that they're slightly more willing to make this a true capitalist country. What we need is someone who's willing to pull the band-aid off the country despite the intitial shock, and actually fix the underlying issues here. Our country is merely in a process of throwing out pretty little quick fixes and prolonging the fallout instead of playing the slow and steady game and finding true solutions. Your post is a prime example of sensationalist fear mongering and the longer that democrats appeal to irrational pathos instead of the actual American people, the worse this is going to get. Both sides are responsible for this. If done correctly, true capitalism could save millions of people. The number this country is killing without it will steadily increase. I don't know about you, but if ten people have to die to create a vaccine that saves millions, rather than the alternative of millions dying, I'd take the former. I have the utmost empathy though. I just want to see what's good for this country happen.

I don't know how you plan to do that but you can't get healthcare costs down without single payer because the USA spends $9 Billion on administrative costs which is why healthcare is so expensive. They spend $9 Billion because there are so many healthcare companies. Plus single payer is the only system that gets healthy people to buy in, with free market healthy people won't buy in. 3. Pre Obama was free market basically because government didn't have a program, everyone bought the healthcare they wanted and lots of people die because health care companies only want to charge higher so they make more 4. I never said I didn't want more businesses but healthcare companies are good at charging higher prices. Look at medication, prices are rising by 85,000% because of free market, old people can't afford it and have to spend so much money buying medicine they can't afford, the government through government programs buys it which means we the taxpayer pay for it because health companies charge so much for poor people you are just repeating trickle down economic policies that only benefit the 1% over and over and have been disproven to work for the little people GGD Presidential Elections
pie-kun 1,765
I live in California and people need to realize this isn't 'corporate Dems' shelving single-payer healthcare. This bill has been discussed a lot in Sacremento but there are a lot of important and necessary things that have not even been put in the bill yet, probably most importantly how to pay for it. The state projects that implementing single-payer healthcare would cost $400 billion. That's over twice the amount of the budget for the entire state. The bill currently has no method for paying that. There's lots of ideas for funding sources floating out there but they all need to be carefully examined. As the article mentions, they are shelving this for now because there's no way it could be implemented if it became law as is. They have the opportunity to revive it in the next two years and hopefully during that time they can come up with proposals for funding among the many other things the bill needs. This is what I'm trying to say. No **** California will fall if this bill goes through. It won't be good in two years or ten or twenty. It will never be good. Putting a bandaid on an infection wont stop it from spreading to the brain.

They wouldn't if the country cared for their poor instead of giving huge tax breaks to the top one and two per cent. The ACA needed improvement, not to be gutted. Whatever can be done? On the backs of the elderly, poor and children. Just so it pays off in the long term. That's what will happen, and it will happen to the most vulnerable and compromised in our country. Hardly. The more regulation, the more they shift to overseas operations where everything is cheaper and hinders their operations less. And that's only for the most luxurious companies. Every small business will be stifled by the same regulations, making them easy to fail. This leaves whichever corrupt big bank stays to vampirically suck the funds of the American people because there's no alternative but to submit. That's called a monopoly. Whatever can be done to give the people power without making it difficult for businesses to thrive is the best option. 2. I don't want to even get into the massive costs that socialized healthcare would bring along with it. It's ridiculous. 3. Honestly, the power (and even discussion) should be between patient and doctor. The costs should be lowered severely and an actual free market (no, pre-Obamacare was not it either) would fix the issue. Special involvement could be used to make sure that the people and not insurance companies benefit. It's a delicate process. But socialized healthcare would put less money in the pocket of the people to spend on other businesses for instance, which will crash them and cause them to fail in a horrifying domino effect. Just look how much businesses have failed and been unable to start due to regulation. Are you honestly satisfied with the economy as it is? Because I'm sure as hell not. 4. There is no full capitalistic government, so it can't be responsible for the rising costs of medication. That's false. 5. The economy was at a peak from 1983 onwards, and that's when the country pulled out of the recession exponentially faster and more effectively than Obama did in the same time he was allotted that Reagan had. Yeah, it was a hell of a lot worse in 2008 then it was in the early 1980's, but even FDR pulled the country out quicker during the Great Depression, and there was a boom not long afterwards. That's what we call the 1950's suburban glory days, when people could actually afford houses and to feed their families. Where is this post-Obama economic boom?
