Is Lorde A Better Songwriter Than Gaga?

Gaga's best lyrics were from her earlier work like:
"I want your psycho, your vertigo schtick"
"I can't believe how you looked at me with your James Dean glossy eyes; In your tight jeans with your long hair and your cigarette stained lies"
"Raise a glass to mend all the broken hearts of all our wrecked up friends"
"Half psychotic, sick hypnotic, got my blueprint it's symphonic"
"Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch just want my cigarette and hush"
"I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south"
"Put on your shades 'cause I'll be dancing in the flames tonight

And the entire record Teeth
I'd describe her as more avant-garde and pop at the same time, edgy, unique, and at times dirty.

Lorde has lines like:
"Baby be the class clown, I'll be the beauty queen in tears"
"I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air, so there"
"And everyone's competing for a love they won't receive"
"We're never done with killing time. Can I kill it with you?"
"But I got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison
And I’m locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me"

"In the morning, you'll be dancing with all the heartache
And the treason, the fantasies of leaving"
"I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops; I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me; But in the darkest hours I stumbled on a secret power, I'll find a way to be without you babe"
And the entire songs Liability and Royals.
Lorde is a whole other level of genius. Her work is dearly poetic, ethereal, heart-wrenching, and full of depth.

Both are amazing artists. Lorde's caliber for her age and her contemporaries is astounding. Her lyrics are hypnotic and mesmerizing and will catch you off-guard. Gaga's songwriting is iconic and avant garde, sometimes relatable, but very empowering, entertaining, either energizing or heart-breaking, and that's why people buy her.

The two belong to different spectra of pop music which have different songwriting styles needed. Gaga needs to prove nothing at this point to prove how good she is in songwriting. Lorde however is taking us by surprise every time she gets better and better with her craft.

(btw, my favorite songwriter has gotta be Jess Glynne!)

Honestly, Melodrama was a big step down from Pure Heroine in terms of songwriting. In a lot of songs it appears she was trying to write a "hook" but it just fell flat, or she was trying to go for a certain structure but it made no sense in terms of the overall song...

Wow I can't believe almost all the top critics in the industry disagree. Universal acclaim.

No, just... no.

Lorde's lyrics are often faux-intellectual and pretentious, in all honesty. Like, very few times do they have any certain flow. I don't care how many metaphors you can stuff into 3 minutes - it doesn't make a song any more listenable. Gaga has that ability where her lyrics on the surface seem senseless and silly, but under that surface, they're gripping and are total earworms. That is successful pop-songwriting: once it's in, it doesn't leave. The verses of Paparazzi, for example, aren't only clever, they're catchy. And that chorus? Better than anything in Lorde's discography. And Paparazzi isn't even in the middle to top tier of Gaga's songs for me. She's that good. But people will continue to downplay her talents because she's unabashedly a dance/pop artist.

I never bashed Gaga for being a bad songwriter, both are extremely excellent, but Lorde has definitely proved her writing abilities with both her albums as well as Gaga

I wasn't talking to you specifically, it's just that I've seen many people here say Lorde is a better songwriter just because they are so hyped from Melodrama rn

Spoiler

btw I LOVE Melodrama, Lorde did that and she looks like a promising artist and I'm already perchedT for what she'll do next!

and tbh I kinda agree with what some people said here, they have very different writing styles and it's not easy to compare... let's just say they are both very gifted and talented women who put out great music for us to enjoy :music:

I've never payed attention to her music not her writing skills. Not that I hate it. I just never have payed attention.

Gaga has a lot of versatility to her songwriting, but lyrically they have completely different perspectives, both in their themes and execution.

People usually don't even realise what Gaga's singing about it's not for everyone, while Lorde writes in a way people understand. Wish Gaga could stop pushing herself so hard, and write normal love songs like she used to before the Fame. Second time around, Captivated........

It depends what you're comparing, Angel Down is brilliant but the rest of Joanne is beaten by the majority of Lorde's discography imo
