_And should we listen to what critics say?

if so, we have to exclude from our playlists the half of Pop Music´s Treasures.

They're very different and not comparable. That being said, both are great

They have very different themes and creative directions. I'm not sure it's possible to compare. Gaga will, sometimes, write very silly lyrics just for fun, whilst Lorde is always very intense and instrospective about songwriting, but it doesn't mean she's better. The thing is, people can't quite put a pin on Gaga's songwriting and say "oh, she writes about that, and in that way" because it's different every time, so they ( I mean mostly critics) don't like that she keeps them on their toes, they never know what she will be about lyrically, so they call her inconsistent. Lorde, on the other hand does have a very unique, but definetly tangible style, which critics like because, well it's brilliant and innovative by comparison to other more traditional songwriting, but also, it's not unpredictable, it always makes sense for her. It's what they call consistency. Plus, there's also ageism in pop music. Lord is younger, she sings about being young, and partying, and your first heartbreak (though in a much deeper and meaningful way than your average pop singer), people like young, she everybody's new hot star. Something else: Lorde is a relluctant star, people love to say that they love that. Gaga has always felt far too comfortable being a star (I've always been famous, it's just that no one knew about it), so people eventually got tired of that. But first and foremost, what differentiates them, and what is Lorde legitimate and real quality over Gaga is the fact that Lorde doesn't take herself too seriously, something that Gaga always did and that always made people kind of roll their eyes at her and always be willing to antagonize her ("This is the best album of the decade").

Important music critics disagree with you

Really?

Well Gaga has 5 albums full of meaningful lyrics that are better than Lordes

Also Gaga has a Songwriter Hall of Fame award.

When Lorde achieves that, then we can say she is atleast on the same level as Gaga.

But she isnt, Lorde is not a better song writer than Gaga

I like her songs but in the same way I like Lana's songs. They're all the same but they're the same goodness. It's like how I order some type of spicy chicken for probably 70% of my meals...monotonous but still good.

I was thinking during Melodrama how her lyrics are still so immature talking about going to parties and dealing with coming-of-age issues, while albums like Joanne or Lemonade have a sense of maturity and maternalism that Lorde doesn't have yet

I mean she is 20. So that makes sense. And her debut album was when she was 16.

When I think about that, I see her music far superior according to her age.

At the end of the day, do we really need to put that much effort into "proving" Gaga is better?

They are both great and each has flaws as well as strengths

Your argument is back to front, henny. We're discussing lyrics, not what they  said during interviews. And Gaga's lyrics, especially during The Fame and TFM, are rich with clever wordplay and tongue in cheek irony. Conversely, during BTW Gaga became more transcendental :

"Whether life's disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
'Cause baby, you were born this way"

So of course Gaga takes herself and her art seriously. That's what serious artists do. She's not a comedian. Whether or not her lyrics border on the silly or the the profound.

"I know mom and dad think I'm a mess.

But it's alright because, I am rich as piss"

(from Mary Jane Holland). Gaga is always taking the piss out of herself in her music.

Unlike Lorde who always demands to be taken seriously with her lyrics so literal, depressing and humourless. Melodrama can be summed up in three words: Wah wah wah.

Wtf. After all the years waiting melodrama should be as good as it is.  Lorde doesn't come close. Gaga please don't read this thread what an insult!

Gaga's lyrics are poetic, vivid, dry, sardonic and masterly. They have romance and mystery. She writes for the ages.

I'd say it depends on which albums...

I don't find Lady Gaga's writing beyond amazing on Joanne tbh...

Though Lorde is not even coming close to TF / TFM / BTW or even ARTPOP writing

Gaga is the better musician but Lorde is by far the better lyricist.

5 albums of meaningful lyrics? :rip: where the **** are they? Joanne is her most meaningful album yet and most songs are still meh-superficial lyrically. Born This Way and TFM are the only Gaga albums that show that even though her lyrics aren't very deep ,they can be very entertaining, creative and original at times. ARTPOP is a horribly written album at most parts

(I do believe that Gaga is pretty good at melodies but really lyrics are not her strongest asset)

Beyonce has a songwriter hall of fame award as well and she hasn't written a song in her life.
