You could be forgiven for thinking the tiny Gulf state would want all the friends it can get as it faces a stand-off with its neighbours in the Middle East. But Berliners were horrified when the long-awaited restoration of the city’s historic Villa Cale was unveiled by the Qatari embassy this week. A frieze which dominates the main facade of the building has been covered over with the German and Qatari flags — because it features a nude female figure considered offensive to Qatari values. The Gulf state plans to use the villa as a diplomatic guest house and centre for Arab culture. It's international territory. But it's an historic building and part of German history and culture. If Germans put a naked woman on a historic building in Qatar everyone would get super mad.
