UK slowest growing economy in the EU

"The UK had the lowest GDP growth rate in the European Union in the first quarter of 2017, according to the European statistics agency Eurostat.

Britain’s 0.2 per cent expansion in the three months to March, down sharply from the 0.7 per cent growth in the final quarter of 2016, put it at the bottom of the EU league table.

The UK’s large Continental peers – Germany, France – grew by 0.6 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively.

Reports last week suggested Italy’s economy had grown by 0.2 per cent in the first quarter – equal to the UK. But Eurostat now puts Italy’s growth at 0.4 per cent.

Even Greece, which has endured years of depression, grew faster than the UK, with its economy expanding by 0.4 per cent.

Data is not yet available for Malta, Luxembourg and Ireland, but given those economies grew at a quarterly rate of 1.7 per cent, 1.3 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively in the final quarter of 2016 it would take a remarkable collapse for them to come below the UK."

Wow I'm genuinely surprised. Seriously though- how? :duck:

Brexit and Indyref2 (Scotland seceding) have called into question the future of the UK and people are less confident in investing and corporations aren't even sure yet if they should move operations out of the UK since we will no longer have free access to the markets of the rest of the EU.

The economy in the UK will probably flatline for the next few years if no good trade deal is announced during negotiations with the EU.

I wouldnt say IndyRef2 caused it, it was Brexit and the Tories spending so much on their campaign. The Tories spend much more than Labour. We are in so much debt right now, and companies are worried that we are unable to pay it back.

Do you mean campaign advertising? Because the money the Tories spend on advertising their party is hugely unlikely to have a big enough influence as to slow the entire economy growth of the country.

Indyref2 would be a massive contributor in this because the UK as a whole is a much riskier investment if the second major country in it is about to pull out, investments require long-term security and indyref2 as well as brexit happening at the same time completely get rid of any of that.

Regardless of if people think Indyref2 & Brexit are good things or bad things what is true is that they are both contributing to economic harm right now, although most likely to be short term.

Really hoping the effects of Brexit are as small as possible on both the U.K. and EU's economies, both are major trade partners and losing free trade is going to be damaging to everyone not just the U.K., hopefully we go for a soft Brexit but it isn't looking likely

Brexit/election have caused instability which always hinders growth. This is nothing new or alarming and is not due to the winner of either vote but due to the fact they were held.
