Ziggy 11,798
Tbh I think it's pretty exciting that a Spanish song is #1. Whether you like the song or not, the precedent it sets is a good thing. As for the other songs, I've only heard Humble which I perfectly understand why that one's so huge. It has this sick, malevolent beat, his rhyme and rhythm are smooth and easy for white people to get on, but distinct enough to stand out. Lyrically, it also can be listened to and rapped by white people and Kendrick already has urban radio on lock so that was never a worry. It's actually a pretty diverse group of top songs which I see as a good thing. I also don't find very much of the pop music being put out right now to be all that appealing, it all sounds kind of samey to me or bland.

gagzus 15,867
I think because American society has become a trophy life concept and my theory is now that American can be more open about their hypocrisy, racism, sexism etc it has impacted society a lot for example Sense8 could have EASILY been a network show but it isn't because it focuses on LGBT & PoC characters mostly, same goes for the charts. if you look at the charts the more popular acts right now like Justin Bieber and Migos, are homophobes and sexist and even racist but Americans support it. It's ironic America exposed their bigotry to me yet they are stanning black rappers and music and a song in the language of a country trump wanted to build a wall to keep out. It's not just music really it's just the world in general rn, quality has dropped in everything. But I will say music itself isn't necessarily tragic but Pop certainly is, check our more Alt R&B because the genre is thriving in popularity and quality lately. VforVendetta 2,024
Pop music has been decaying for more than 20 years now. Music has become more about quanity than quality and so the industry (which has always been about money since we have capitalism) took the bate and started giving more quantity and less quality, more artists but less artistic integrity, more music but less meaning, more songs but less originality. If any of you have given some time to listen to music of older ages: blues, rock, classical, Jazz, new wave or even pop of the 70's and 80's you will realise the gap in quality. There has always been bad quality music and cheap artists that represented it but they were never dominant in the music scene. Today decayed music has dominated the music scene and people keep asking for more, just look at what has happened with Katy Perry the last weeks. Where would someone with Katy Perry's talents and qualities be in the 60's when the Beatles, Deep Purple Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd dominated the music world? Where would she be n the 70's amd the 80's when ABBA, Michael Jackson, David Bowie or even Madonna paved the road to Pop? Nowhere. Today music has become about women singing about sex and butts and men singing about being rich, swag and having chics. It's the truth and you know it but many of you still choose to replay Katy's recycled tunes that some years ago wouldn't even be deemed worthy of the elevator. This creates demand and the money hungry industry is giving you more.We all have our part in the ruining of popular music so don't complain about the world and look into a mirror. I don't get any of what directions pop music are going for right now. Why the hell is a spanish song #1 all of a sudden? Why is the lack of female artists in the top 10 becoming a norm now? Perhaps many of the songs are actually good and they are just not my style (because I'm not into hip hop which there's an abundance of now). Or is it simply just that pop music has become utter trash? But why? How? Could it actually be worst than last year? Not just pop, the quality of music today is decreasing each year, there are no good songs, or it seems like there are no good materials anymore. In this world of so much violence, I would've thought there would emerge another Tupac, but hip hop isn't even hip hop anymore. Pop isn't pop anymore, it sounds unauthentic, it losts all of its old magic. Feels like nobody is inspired and no artists inspire each other. Now you always gotta go back to the past if you wanna listen to good tunes that don't give you a headache or make you feel dull. I been so far in the past I got way back into the 1940s because I'm bored. Music is boring in 2017, I hope 2018 gets better but I doubt it, not tryna be negative but I just doubt it
RonnieGagz 4,300
Music in the radio is really that bad. But the old pop stars are releasing masterpieces so you should hear them instead of trying to find something good in the charts ♡Gaga♡TØP♡Nightwish♡Lana♡Lorde♡Grimes♡

That's actually the opposite of my point. Artists like Katy ARE decaying. The 'pop girls' of the early 2010s...people have moved on from them, but it hasn't gotten any better, in fact it might be worse. It's these new breeds of artists that are so called 'edgy' and less 'commercial-sounding', yet even lower in quality that truly baffles me.

Killa 17,464
Well it must be Despacito right? The truth is that song is the only real summer smash. I can't just think of another, even last year there was some. oh that Ed song has also managed to be a summer smash It's a very sad summer if you ask me. I kinda like those hits that appear out of the blue and so far nothing

My point is that the pop music scene today seems really confused. Not since the Macarena has there been a non english song topping the US charts. Are we actually really regarding a song like Despacito to be as much of a historical iconic music moment as the Macarena? (not trying to put that novelty song on a pedestal...)
