I don't agree with all that Blaire says, but she makes a good point and has educated and factual arguments so I'd advise you to watch this

Blaire has never made a good point in her entire gotdamn life. I swear if I never see a video posted of her by a gay again it'll be too soon

I did not accuse you of reverse racism... Did you read what I said? I said that reverse racism is not a thing and that when you say things like "why is there no white stripe" it perpetuates the false idea that whites are an oppressed and marginalized group that should have recognition as such. I did not know your race and didn't need to know your race to make that point. Your color does not preclude you from making statements that are detrimental to progress. I never said only white people are asking about the white stripe.

I totally understand where you are coming from, but the question about inclusion arises for me. I don't think adding two stripes to the flag is necessary, but what you were saying and what their intent of being intersectionally inclusive is completely accurate. I guess what confuses me is that you say we should be intersectional and that we shouldn't marginalize groups based on race, but isn't insinuating that there is no need for a white stripe counterintuitive to the whole idea of intersectional inclusion and support for ALL communities? Again, I totally understand the desire to represent the ideas of inclusiveness in this terrible battle of racism and sexism we are enduring, but it just seems like since some white people have these backwards views, all of us end up being vindicated for it, which makes no sense for the argument and the progression of equality for all races, religions, genders, and sexual orientations.

I mean, I get the intent behind it, but I don't think it's really necessary. The colours on the flag are a rainbow, a symbol of peace, love and unity. It's not about which colours are represented on the flag, but the flag itself as a symbol.

I appreciate your comments :) and I'm glad that you agree with me mostly

The difference is that white people are not an oppressed or marginalized group in this country. There's nothing wrong with white/black/brown people coming together to work together, but when we're talking about the issues we face, white people often need to be ALLIES towards solving the issues that people of color face. You don't need a special stripe to show that white people are included, white people are by definition included in everything in this country.

In other words, putting the black and brown stripes up (although I don't think it needs to be done) would be a symbol of intersectionality -- of all people (white included) showing intersectional support for the marginalized group(s) which are the ones represented in the proposed flag

But the rainbow flag was never 'only for white people'? :oprah:

rainbow= inclusiveness for all, no matter what color you are

Exactly!

i think the real problem here is how the LGBT flag is mostly only associated with cis white gay men and therefore the rest of us feel unrepresented, specially LGBT people of color

I really don't understand, why POC would feel unrepresented.

Also, all black people support LGBT? All black people are gay? Of course not. Unless all POC movements acknowledge LGBT and gives support to us, I don't see how it is fair to change our unique "symbol".

Tbh I think the idea that if anyone stands up for any group, they're obligated to stand up for every group is pretty silly. It's just not realistic.

Not all POC support the LGBTQ community and not all LGBTQ people feel like getting caught up in race debates. Both are perfectly fine :laughga: we all have our own priorities and our own causes that we care about. No one is obligated to stand up for everyone else. It'd be nice if they did but if you're expecting it, you'll be disappointed often :laughga:

One more side note, I hate how every discussion on race becomes whites vs everyone else :deadbanana: white people aren't the only ones capable of racism, they are capable of being victims of racism (just like anyone else), and nothing is as simple as some of you seem to think it is :rip: there isn't a fine and solid line in the sand here and nothing is black and white. It's all different shades of grey :spin:

LGBT and the flag isn't about the colour of the people within the communities though :duck: I feel like bringing colour into it is unnecessary, they're two different things :laughga:

I'm sorry, but since when has this flag EVER been a symbol for racial acceptance?

It's a symbol for acceptance of all the sexualities which stray from the norm. I swear, social justice warriors should go find themselves a proper hobby; before they get any more delusional   :saladga:

I'm not opposed to having different flags, but to add horizontal stripes to the overall flag presents a problem from a design and meaning standpoint.

The creator of the flag designed each of the colors to mean things like love, healing, nature, spirit and serenity. However, colors were removed and went absent because A). Fabric wasn't available for it or B). From a design standpoint it looked better condensed (like removing the pink band), emphasizing core colors of the rainbow more.

The meaning of the flag encompasses a range of emotions and feelings, etc. Adding the two extra bands to represent race, from a thematic standpoint, conflicts, especially with the artist's original intent. Granted several communities have their own flags with different meanings; there's transgender, intersex and asexual (which actually has black and white bands in it to represent varying differences in asexuality).

I'm not opposed to pride flags existing for different marginalized POC. I would actually recommend they take one of the new bars, place it vertically on the left hand side of the flag, and have the rainbow colors emerging from it. Placed vertically it fits nicely while still keeping the core essence of the flag without breaking the margins, AND adds extra meaning as to me it says "We are black LGBT people and we embody the following traits of love, serenity, nature, spirit, etc."

stacking neutral colors (whether it's a black, brown or white band) on top of vibrant colors can be jarring visually but I think the vertical suggestion solves it.
