It's a way to show respect to the artists art, to not cover up the artists voice and for the crowd to actually hear the songs the singer is singing because they paid good money. Of course Britney would be insecure about the crowd being silent because the crowds screaming always helps mask a tiny bit her tragic lip syncing.
