People act like the US is the only country in the world. Chained to the Rhythm was top ten on iTunes worldwide for like 8 weeks. It's still top 30 in Italy. Bon Appetit is top 5 in France and she will continue promo worldwide.

Honestly this. I see some speaking as if our own queen has been owning the charts when she's been struggling on the singles chart for ages in different markets.

We need to be a little bit humbler. Yes Katy is under performing in the US but she will still end up outselling our very own fav and out streaming her when the era is all said and done and if that is considered a "flop" then what does that make Gaga?

We sound nuts sometimes lol

Additionally, artists who care about their work will extend an era and give it the attention it requires even if it under performs. If she truly believes in Witness she will not cut the era short simply because the singles are under performing in the US. She could very well extend the era to a year and a half as she mentioned even if it under performs. Many artists stick by their era and keep releasing mvs, singles etc..until they at least make their album look like a "full" era.

The way her singles are going, Capitol might just cut their losses and stop the era early, at least single-wise. There's no reason she can't still promote and tour but if the next single's a flop, just stop releasing them. All she's got left is solo tracks now. If she can't get a hit with help, she won't get one on her own. Fifth Harmony had a much bigger lead single and the stopped releasing singles after the next 2 flopped. That's just how the business works now, it's cut-throat. I find it very odd that she plans out how long each era will last because you don't know what life's going to throw at you. It's like she's planning the era assuming that it's going to be a hit. Her European tour dates not starting for another year is testament to how much she thinks that the album's going to have longevity. She should never have released the tour dates pre-album, she needed to work out touring demand first as I don't think anyone was anticipating the amount of flopping she would do and the lack of general interest in her album. In a sense, making the rest of the world wait so long for the international legs could help as she'll need to have the album out longer and the tickets available for longer to give maximum time to drum up any demand.

She's flopping even harder worldwide than she is in the US. One successful single doesn't mean people will buy your album or your tour tickets, especially in Europe. CTTR is the only one of her songs that charted in the top 100 in New Zealand, despite her selling out 2 arena dates there with Prismatic. Australia has also only given her one successful single, despite her having a mammoth touring leg there with Prismatic. Asia as a whole has not been here for her whatsoever. The only place I've seen any of her songs charting in was Japan and even then, it wasn't top ten. Europe's biggest music markets (UK, France, Germany, Italy) have also given her just one hit this era. If the biggest markets aren't even on her side, I don't fancy her chances anywhere else. By the looks of things, she isn't even going to Mexico with this tour even though she's always been big there because they just haven't been buying her new work. Thing is, she can promote all she wants, promo is having very little effect on her sales this time. She's been on a lot of major events and its not making her songs shoot up the charts at all.

It is not just a buzz. Wikipedia defines it as the second single. It was sent to radio, has an expensive music video, has multiple remixes and has been promoted on the Tasty YouTube channel, she handed out cherry pies in Times Square, she sang it at the Met Gala, SNL and Carpool Karaoke and The Voice France so far. Nobody goes that far for a buzz single. It's amazing how some people will go to any lengths to believe that an artist isn't flopping.

The difference is that Gaga sells albums regardless of whether she has a hit or not. Her last 2 albums have only produced one US top ten each but have still sold over 700k and 500k there, respectively. Very, very few artists can do that these days. How do you know that Katy will end up outselling her? She's never flopped like this before, so how do you know what the future holds? And no, her performance being similar to Gaga's would not make Gaga a flop because Gaga wasn't aiming to be hugely successful with Joanne. I believe someone on her team even said that because so much of the album was so anti-commercial, they were just treating it as if it were the debut album from an indie artist. Basically, they weren't expecting it to even sell as much as AP. Gaga also barely promoted Perfect Illusion and didn't seem to care when it flopped and she's not released a third single despite it being over half a year since the last one. She's had a very different vision for this album as opposed to Katy. Katy's still approaching things the way she's always done and the old school route to getting success - 2/3 single pre-album, highly commercial, lots of promo, concert tickets on sale pre-album. She's wanting this to be another huge era for her. She's said in her Forbes interview before that she loves making money. And as for extending the era even if it's not a hit - artists only do that if their label allows it. Most don't, not even indie labels. The industry isn't making the money it used to, so they can't give every artist a 5-single era with 5 high-budget music videos, promo on the biggest shows, tour dates all over the world, etc. All that is a lot of money to waste if the majority of the public aren't interested.

Put it this way - Katy's US fans have always ensured that all her singles go top 40, even her biggest flops have managed to go top 40. But for the first time ever, she's failed to get top 40 with not one, but two pre-album singles. The US is her biggest market, what's going on? If she can't even be big there, what hope does she have internationally?

A year and a half? Not unless she starts getting some hits off of this album.

Maybe she will do a re-release?

Antichrist

people will find anything just to shade or drag a certain person, i wonder how they don't get sick of that, must be sad living a life where a pop star is so important to you you literally inspect every single chart position and predict it and connect to everything she does.

what if we'd just **** everything and enjoy the music? or not enjoy it for that matter, if it's not your type. it's always great to see someone in such a systematic world experimenting and trying something different FOR THEM (maybe not for everyone else).
