Was Joanne a flop? (Be honest)

I keep falling in love Joanne more and more every day

Although it caught me off guard, I'm glad she released it. She's really went from hated by the GP to loved... I don't know one person who REALLY hates her.

I'm ready for LG6

Make sure to show receipts:sure:

But was Joanne a flop? I know it didn't do amazingly well, but I don't think it was supposed to either because I'm sure Gaga knew it was hardly gonna break the higher ends of the charts for long, as it simply wasn't generic EDM and was primarily country.. it was a gift of sentiment to the fans. She's proven with The Cure that if she really wants to crack the Top 10 end of the charts then she could (with hardly any promotion at that).

Was it considered good for a pop/soft rock/country album or was it a general flop? How did it compare to other albums released in 2016? Receipts?

FYI, I personally thought Joanne was amazing.

I think it's a good indicator of what the GP is beginning to expect from her.

PI didn't do that great, and I think it had more to do with it's repetitiousness than anything. Yet Million Reasons came along and it has been holding out on the charts for so long now.

I think the public's reaction and affinity toward MR show's the public really enjoys her ballads; vocals and songwriting ability included. I think the reaction signifies that they know she can sing and deliver, and maybe that's why her other endeavors (Perfect Illusion, John Wayne) aren't doing well (Except for the Cure).

Regardless of its overall reception it gives me hope that Gaga can experiment with different genres and still have a measure of success and talent. I'd really love for her to release a solely piano ballad-esque album. I think it would do well commercially, especially if she continues to deliver the vocals and songwriting.

As for the whole album, it's hard to say. I can see it easily fading into the background unless she releases something in a similar vein as Joanne, and shows a lot of improvement from now (Joanne) up to then (LG6, LG7?). Like it's great that it's wholly unique, but to the point it'll fade into the background of past and future endeavors. At the end of the day if she was happy making it, then I'm happy for her. I'd hate to have her make an album she's not fully invested in or even wants to make.

if you liked it, it wasn't a flop.  Fans don't need external validation for their music choices.

Hopefully more people'll be into LG6 if the numbers are creeping up.. especially if she goes back to pop

Nah. Expect her sales and relevancy to slip tbh. She cannot pull off visuals anymore and her streams are abysmal when they are becoming more important every day.

What we should hope for is another amazing quality album like she always delivers! but to hope for chart success when she has been slipping in terms of relevancy, aging, lack of radio support, lack of streaming power etc.. is not realistic anymore unfortunately. Plus her next real pop album cycle will probably be by end of 2019-2020...the more you wait the less chance you have at succeeding in this fast paced industry. It is what it is.

I'll personally be content if she can get another top 20 hit with LG6, over 300k pure sales total in the US and a nice tour.

and this too tbh. I feel like we have let chart success consume our appreciation of music. Charts are all fun and games but at the end of the day if you really loved the music then it was a triumph for Gaga. The sales are just bonus tbh :p

How can a #1 album be called a flop. Seriously :awkney:

So many albums that went #1 ended up flopping in sales. (not Joanne. it did rather well) but the question is valid as many #1 albums are true pure chart flops unfortunately. (at least in the pop realm...high peaks mean nothing anymore. it's all about total sales and streams at the end of the album cycle).

considering the fact that she was publicly support hillary and bashing trump, after perfect illusion fell off the charts withing 3 weeks, and being a folk/country infused pop album i'd say it did mighty fine.

I Met Lady Gaga On February 7th, 2016; Attended Superbowl 51 and Coachella 2017.

I think she can pull off visuals... it's been one pop album where the visuals are not as great as we know Gaga for and the Coachella opening really blew my mind along with A-YO and Sexxx Dreams visuals, so there's hope. I just don't think she knew how to completely portray the stripped back visuals on Joanne, and that's ok.

Its kind of funny though that she lacks in streaming as she was seen as the future of music when she first started but can't keep up with the current trend of streaming. Although CDs could make a come back just like Viynls and she could succeed in that.

Even when Gaga is at her lowest, she's still miles above the other pop girls when they're at their lowest :nick:

Commercial wise...

Well, considering that album itself got her the freaking Super Bowl Halftime Show this year, I don't think it's a flop, imo

but The Cure didn't crack Top 10 in the official charts, being successful on iTunes for a few days is not the same as having an official Top 10 hit
