manicholic 3,694
http://metro.co.uk/2017/05/30/has-donald-trump-been-buying-followers-on-twitter-6672610/ Donald Trump’s Twitter followers are growing. And by ‘growing’, we mean he is gaining hundreds of new followers every minute. But a large percentage of the followers have no picture… or tweets… or followers themselves. Oh, and pretty much all of the accounts were created in May 2017. In fact the President of the United States has somehow gained five million followers in the last few days, so it’s no surprise that many people are questioning if he has bought them. Or if he is attempting to beat Barack Obama’s 89.2 million (only 59 million to go, Trump). According to Twitter Audit, 14,776,939 of Trump’s followers are fake. Meaning just over 50% of his followers are real. Granted, it’s pretty easy to buy followers – so Trump may not have actually bought them himself. They could also be bots… or real people who all started their account on the same day and decided to follow him. Hundreds of people, however, are now questioning where the fake followers are coming from on Twitter. One said: ‘Did Donald Trump actually buy 3 million followers how insecure is he?’ Another said: ‘Unsurprisingly, over half of Donald Trump’s followers are fake. Bought, bots or both?’ Metro.co.uk has contacted Donald Trump’s representatives for comment. There's nothing harder for people to do than admit they were fooled. PartySick 172,426
"Mr. Trump, how many Twitter followers do you have?" "I, uh, can't disclose that at the moment. I'm under audit." Spoiler I'm sorry but Whimsical bitch
venusfly 17,885
Unlikely, the thing about follower bots is that to avoid being detected they have to have normal following patterns as well as false ones to make them seem like active accounts so they don't get flagged by Twitter, to do this they will follow all the large twitter accounts themselves every other hour as well as following people who have purchased followers. This means that celebrity accounts often have large bot followings because bots follow them here and there to make them seem less suspicious, it's easy to spot a large amount of accounts all following the same person at the same time but its not easy to spot them if they're following different people at different times of the day just like normal people would. But I don't think that explains this. Why is this not the case with way more popular accounts? chaeri pls

It's actually usually the case for popular accounts if you look at Gaga's real/fake ratio on that site its pretty terrible, and its the same for most of the larger stars and accounts on twitter. There's also a few articles out there by journalists who realised that after they got verified they would get thousands of followers per day by random bot accounts whereas they'd get 1 or 2 a day before verification. Again I'm talking about the thread title. It says "5 million followers in 3 days". If that number is fake then obviously I'm wrong. chaeri pls
