I'm not trying to be the grammar police but in place of "intensive purposes" you're going to want to use "intents and purposes" moving forward as that is the proper use of the phrase.

Anyhow, many cities are not dramatically affected by the spike in housing costs. Furthermore, rural areas very near our cities are crying for growth. If young people can't find housing in Vancouver.... move to Surrey? Lol it's close and there's a skytrain and it's SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. I think there's a lot of people who refuse to do what they have to do to get by.

For me, I live and go to University 35 minutes from Halifax and my rent for a beautiful one bedroom with a view of the ocean that is next door to the University is literally $450 (that I split with my boyfriend, so $225 each). If young people can't find accommodation in urban areas they will have to go elsewhere. I guess they'd rather live with their parents and be a burden and complain about everything though? Dunno. It's annoying though.

I live on the East Coast and there is no shortage of reasonably priced properties. Those cities are absolutely ****ed though and it's because foreign buyers are saturating the market and driving prices up and Canada is too Liberal to do anything about it.

Yeah but the point is many young ones who move out loose on better oppurtunities where they are more plentiful in big cities, and young ones are the first time buyers

 

Also not everyone is willing to move outskirts. Those who stay with parents, back to the issue im talking about, delayed household Formation

 

Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Hamilton, Barrie, Montreal and others i may not know of have all been surging. This is hardly just a few cities as you suggest. These are population metros that make up a significant share of the Nations responsibility

 

your philosophy in what people should do, or that they should move etc is kind of irrelevant. The point is its affecting peoples decisions. And its very unaffordable. Thats the point.

 

PS: I would have moved out by now if it was affordable. The crazy rents in the Toronto area have kept me staying with my parents till further notice

I feel you, in Israel we have  the same problem.. like you need to pay 750$ for a one room apartment that you sleep 1 step from the kitchen and the toilet, you can actually sh-it and cook at the same time.. my sister and her husband can't buy a house and not even to rent a proper house so they just work to save for 3 years already and postponing the first kid.

It's a global crisis!!

I know and it's sad, it's becoming really a luxury for rich people only.

We had to move to CR for my husband's job and we were amazed by the prices but it's only because they had a big movement of USian expats many years ago so they built those projects for them and then they went back to the US, so 4 years ago they continued to build those projects and lowered the prices, the most expensive apartment (2 rooms, 2 bedrooms 88m2) is 190,000$..

Honestly, this is the price that every apartment that is not in a big towers and is not a luxury should cost..

The number of families that can pay millions for an apartment is not that high..

Here in Canada most people have tones of money to blow on entertainment and things because its a small percentage of income.

 

Spend less than an hours income to go to a restaurant, movies or whatever. Most people can pay for an all inclusive vacation in carabean with 1 or 2 weeks worth of pay only

 

But then housing the most basic thing stretches people to the limit because its so expensive. 

 

It used to be that houses only cost over $1 Million in Toronto. But now we see those prices in suburbian cities like where i live too. And my grandparents 110 year old crusty house in Toronto is worth $1.6M 😳

 

This needs to end or im never moving out of my parents house 😭

Such huge spikes is giving hundreds of thousands of profit equity to older home owners at expense of younger generation that is being squeezed to the limit for housing. Its not fair!

It really isn't fair at all. It's bs imo because like, how can the younger generation sprout, grow, and create a life for themselves if they can't even afford their own place? I know for me it's been insanely difficult. I'm turning 27 this year and still stuck staying with family. In my area, it's around $1500 rent for a studio apartment, not including ammenities or anything, which has not been realistic for me and I can vouch for myself and say that it has definitely effected my life mentally not only the financial situation, but not having room to really be a total and complete adult

The worst is also the rent, it's too high and you get to live in a place that I wouldn't let animals to live.. the owners just don't care because in any case someone will take it..

In Israel the salaries are very low, the minimum is 1000$ and the majority of the people are getting that salary, or really a little bit more, you just can't buy a house with this salary and live a proper life, you become a slave to your house.. and even the entertainment things are expensive.. like a ticket for a regular movie costs 15$ and then there is the food..

So you like need to choose between many things and all the leaders could do is to raise the salaries, axe the housing prices for a short time, even if it's a free economy and capitalism, housing is one of the first rights for a human being and it comes before profit..

I feel you, my sister lives with her mother in law for 3 years and soon enters the 4th.. I was lucky enough to move to France, the salary of my husband was very high so we could afford the rent and to live an average healthy life..
