I know she is and that is irrefutable, it's just Beyonce is more active in recent years. In my messy era.
heimerdinger 36
Hopefully Britney will have the energy to go back to touring instead of las vegas residency
Smother Em Eh 7,132
As they are both very popular and successful, I will have to say Britney. But you know what's odd? I never hear many people talk about Britney anymore. I've heard so many people talk about Beyoncé in just the last 3 years, but hardly ever Britney. I wonder why that is. E24187 615
Britney had an earlier and higher peak. Beyonce has been far more consistent. Dont really care tho.
mzncb 332
One more thing: Even if you don't include Christina Aguilera among Britney clones Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson and Willa Ford (Saying Christina debuted before Britney supports Britney because her image change from 'Reflection' to 'Genie' implies a Britney clone), the Britney of the early 2000s overall also birthed the anti-Britney clones, helping to shape the careers of P!nk, Avril Lavigne and Amy Lee. DON'T even think about trying to argue with her impact. It's already in the literature and articles from the time (P!nk ran with being marketed as an anti-Britney to re-invent herself with 'Missundaztood', just like Avril Lavine) and imprinted in their music. I bring this up as Pitchfork and others attempt to re-asses and totally overrate Destiny's Child's impact in order to boost Beyonce's legacy. Props to Beyonce for her longevity, but Britney's impact, at least in this area is unalterable; as I said it's already in the literature and in the music of the times and not a matter of pathetic Pitchfork nonsense re-evaluation over a decade later. So you couple that, along with their music, sales etc... and respective influence on the next generation of artist and their works and their legacies are very close. I found this question very interesting. When Beyonce was on Destiny's Child, Britney was huge. But then.. it felt like kind of flip-flop. So what's your opinion? The fact that Pink was also in that Pepsi warrior ad and she is also still huge. I don't think Beyonce will ever sell as many albums, just because of how the market is right now but Beyonce is as big or close to being as big as Britney in her prime. In the USA - probably, WW - not even 1/5 of Prime Britney. In Europe Beyonce is not even considered big right now, her last big hit was Single Ladies and a flop like Katy gains more attention(in my country at least). Britney still outsales Beyonce in Asia and South America, so I don't see how she is close to Prime Britney, when Oops sold 2.8 Million coppies in one week and that's more than Lemmonade sold to date + Britney was 18 at the time, still a kid. Overall Britney's impact is way bigger and also it was global, unlike Beyonce who is praised only in the US.
Raikov 183
There must be a lot of young people in this topic if you think Britney is "just a pop icon" while Beyonce is a legend. Britney invented what it means to be a female pop star for the new millenium. Everyone has either been following her or reacting against her. She was a cultural phenomenon that quite frankly no artist in the past 20 years can claim to have reached. She's peaked, but who cares? Her impact, as another poster wrote, has already been made. Beyonce has had a steadier career and is making the transition from singles artist to albums artist, which is always risky, especially for artists like Beyonce with very limited song-writing abilities. She deserves applause for consistently serving music and also for her very strong brand, such that for many kids nowadays she's famous for being Beyonce as opposed to the singer behind Crazy In Love, Halo, Irreplaceable, Single Ladies. But her peak (if she's peaked - she hasn't really been a chart presence but we have to see where her album artistry takes us in the future) hasn't been remotely comparable to Britney's, sorry. It's proof of the brilliance of her brand that people think she is, but Britney was on another level. How many artists are following Beyonce's lead? What is her impact, other than a brief fashion for surprise releases? Beyonce still has a ways to go in her career and it's very possible she'll pivot into a new and interesting artist. Undoubtedly she's a pop icon. Britney may have peaked long ago, but she doesn't need to do anything anymore. We're still feeling the impact of the millions of young girls who were inspired by Britney to want to dance and sing. It will be impossible to talk about forces that shaped pop music in the future without mentioning Britney, but I don't know if I can say the same about Beyonce.
