What Happened Between BTW and ARTPOP?

What happened between early 2011 and late 2013? It seems like Gaga lost a lot of casual listeners and public interest waned. Was it overexposure? What happened? It's almost shocking that ARTPOP was released only two years after the massive BTW era.

Over-exposure during the BTW era, around the You & I mini-era.

Some more "risky" songs (Judas, for example) and the performance art was a bit too hard for a lot of general public to digest.

2012 was supposed to be lowkey with the tour and fragrance, but Gaga attracted negative headlines for drug use and weight gain, and then the hip incident happened, which was a major set-back.

She went away for what felt like a long time, but was only a few months, before reemerging to sing the National Anthem at that Pride event in the summer of 2013. Then the ARTPOP promo blitz thrusted her back into the public conscious, and it seemed to be too must too fast. The public wasn't ready for more performance art. Looking back though, it was 100% necessary for the ARTPOP era to happen the way it did, for reasons I've stated elsewhere.

Modern Ecstacy

I think she was just outside of the spotlight for too long and she lost all the momentum from her previous success. She was already fading by the end of the Born This Way era (example: Marry the Night flopped)

I remember somewhere @ the end of 2012 (or early 2013) when I was in school and some kids in my class were having a discussion like "What happened to Lady Gaga? Where'd she go?"

So I guess her popularity just fell because she was absent for too long. I do think that Applause was the perfect comeback. Still don't understand why it wasn't more successful than it already is.

ARTPOP had so much potential. We could have gotten so much more from that album era. Unfortunately, it was a huge mess due to management and other factors and it just pushed Gaga even further back from her absence from the public.

A lot of people might say over-exposure but I'm not sure I agree, I think her shock factor was no longer a profitable point to push in the media. In the beginning her videos would be reviewed on the basis of how shocking they were and people would watch to see what she did in them, but as more came out it became less interest on what the videos entailed and more about if she could "top herself", if you go back to some of her video reviews you can see they start critiquing her for not being able to top the shock factor of her previous videos.

The interest people once had in Gaga turned into mockery and the media would poke fun at her for trying to top herself when they were the ones that pushed that narrative in the first place. Her weight started getting poked fun at, her ticket sales (which weren't even close to bad) and various other things, which pushed Gaga into the spot where she's in now where people are scared to even admit they like her, she became a punching bag based on a narrative she never even pushed.

ARTPOP didn't help, she got super high-art and came across as pretentious, the increasingly dramatic visuals she pushed only increased the public mocking, but if thats what she wanted to do in that point in her career then she had the right to, but in a commercial sense it wasn't smart.

Born This Way was a very gay electronic heavy album that the GP was not fully here for. Releasing that song as the lead alienated some of the GP. That's when she started to appear uncool (at least in America). Judas was released and people thought she was insensitive and try hard for releasing a single like that around Easter. At that time media traction picked up more than ever (since the album was due in a few weeks). She was severely overexposed and at that point, her singles started to feel the effect. TEOG and Y&I could've easily been bigger than they were but at that point, people were starting to get over her.

Born This Way as an album was a big departure from her previous synth pop sound, so even more fans began to leave her. Her lable thought it would be smart to rush release most of the rest of the singles in the span of 5 months rather than throughout a 1 year cycle.

2012 came around and Gaga stopped promoting BTW and instead worked on tour/fragrance stuff. Unfortunately, 2012 was the year streaming started to gain interest. With no new music to promote (or any digestible singles from BTW for the public) Gaga fell out of sight. The media attacked her for the stupidest things (weight, BS about tour tickets, etc.). There was hope when ARTPOP was announced in late 2012, but the project was pushed back. Early 2013, Gaga was already over worked, her body was tired, etc. and her hip broke. She was gone for months. ARTPOP came around and interest began to increase again, but unfortunately she was overshadowed by other acts at the time that got more media attention (Katy, Miley, etc.) Applause didn't hit number one on billboard and that's when people started calling her a flop. Then everything else happened with her label, manager, etc.

It's a mess. But at least she's salvaged her image and gained respect. The public was super excited for her comeback in the fall, unfortunately PI didn't live up to the hype but she at least gained interest and whatnot to support further singles/projects.

She changed her whole creative team. She started taking things on her own hands during the BTW era. And she couldn't handle it properly. That is the ugly truth.

It's true. It's when everything started going downhill. Nobody in the GP pays attention to the stuff going on between eras. It was the BTW era that made Gaga uncool and overexposed. Sad but true.

casual listeners weren't here for BTW( they were only ready for more TF/TFM) and she was hella over exposed by then.

Then she took a long break and when she came back w ARTPOP it wasn't what the GP wanted again lol

Her original creative team started falling apart, the mismanagement of singles aka the beginning of the second single curse, Madonna comparisions, Laurianne Gibson (her old coreopragher)  being messy on interviews, her hip surgery and excessive consumption of weed, the delay of ARTPOP, which she clearly wanted to release on 2012 but she couldn't...

It was a rough time for Gaga, she probably felt very disappointed, she knew she was falling from the top.
