Netflix Original: GIRLBOSS

When I came across the Trailer of the new Netflix Original Series Girlboss a couple of weeks ago, it looked fun, but I wasn't really sold on it yet:

Girlboss is very loosely based on the actual story of Sophia Amoruso who build a career out of flipping clothes on eBay (later on her own website). A few years after her success story began (also including her writing a book called "#Girlboss") she actually resigned as a CEO and her (former)company went bankrupt, which is why the YouTube comment section of the Trailer is spammed with stuff like: "This is lies, it makes her look successful while her company actually went bankrupt", "Netflix is totally pathetic making her look successful just to push their feminist left agenda", "bluuuh bluh blu". Actually the first season of this series doesn't even cover the whole book "#Girlboss" and that book was focused on Amoruso's starting her business, so there is a lot more to tell. The series creator Kay Cannon (writer of Pitch Perfect 1-3, 30 Rock and New Girl) already talked about how she would love to expand the story to more recent developments of Sophia Amoruso's life, if she were given more seasons to tell that story.

While procrastinating today, Girlboss popped up on my Netflix account so I thought I'd give it a try. Maybe because I was really trying to kill time - just to not think about all the things I should be doing right now - but after a few episodes I started to like it. A couple of hours later I binged the whole season and I have to say: I love it. It has a sharp humor and the longer you invest in it, the more you actually feel for the characters. By the end of the penultimate episode I realized just how much I was rooting for the main character, so yeah - absolutely can't wait for a second season. (and I should get to work now.. :awkney:)

Has anyone watched the first season yet? Did you like it? Has anyone read the book and is it by any means as good as the series/vice versa? Do you plan to watch it after seeing the Trailer here? Is it up your watchlist cause of featuring RuPaul? Discuss. :hor:

Just for the kii, here are two clips, I hope some of you'll enjoy:

GIRLBOSS (S01E04) hilariously referencing the Season 3 Finale of The O.C.

Spoiler

I actually uploaded this clip myself, as I was a huge fan of the O.C. back in the day and laughed very hard during these scenes... :sharon:

The first entrance of Ru-****ing-Paul (he is actually in 6! episodes) :firega:

I absolutely adored every character in the cast except for Sophia, she was certainly the most hateable lead I've ever seen. RuPaul gave me life every time he showed up. The comedy was fun but I really didn't folow it through sometimes, I would just play it while I cooked.

Pink flamingos always fascinated me.

Really?

Well I absolutely see what you mean, but while I did not find her particularly sympathetic, the longer I watched the series, I grew to - not like her, but - accept her as "that's just who she is". Complicated, but some people are very complicated: And...

Spoiler

BIG SPOILER OF EPISODE 12 AHEAD!!!!!

Spoiler

I'm gonna hide it even deeper. DO NOT OPEN IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE 12TH EPISODE.

Spoiler

I'M SERIOUS. This spoils a pretty big plotpoint!

Also I talk about it and kind of also about the aftermath so better finish the season before reading this!

Spoiler

...when Sophia saw her bf getting sucked off and the way she tried to forget about it while putting on a mask of this person who wasn't bothered at all, but the memory of it kept on coming back... I really felt for her. :awkney:

OMG WHAT WHY DID I READ THE SPOILER IM HALFWAY THROUGH THE EPISODE OMG WHAT IS THIS

ANYHOW, I guess I just didn't like her bratty attitude, i really believe in accepting one's mistakes and other's help but she's funny and unexpected, which is part of what made me keep watching the show.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I didn't want to spoil it for anyone... :saladga:

I'm so sorry!

Fair enough. I absolutely get what you're saying about Sophia and like I said, it's not like I would describe her as a nice gal. She's just who she is and -at least for my taste - it makes for entertaining television.

Sorry again! :cryga:

It's fine, I realized I did play that episode but I only caught glimpses of it while I was cooking, I never paid too much attention so I'm gonna have to watch it again. hehehe

It was fun, I binged it when it came out.

Robertson was great in the role and I hated her acting back in the Secret Circle.

The last two episodes affected me in ways that was really unexpected.

Hope there is a season 2. :gaysia:
