Like he wasn't manufacture by his record label with fabricated numbers and songs given to him; to create this larger then life figure. However, for anyone stating that Justin is talentless! Needs to stop.

A useful comparison would be MJ and the Beatles, and how everyone tried to compare their success. In the 80s, it would have been laughable to suggest MJ was anywhere near as successful as the Beatles, given how much cultural weight they carried, and how little time people had to digest MJ's fame. With how much more pervasive, yet splintered our media culture is now than in the 80s and 90s, I'd say Beyonce and Gaga are easily in the same category of fame as MJ and Prince, and given another decade of perspective, people will consider them peers. It didn't happen overnight for MJ or Prince. Beyonce's dominance now, and Gaga's dominance from 08-10 I think easily rival MJ's explosion in 82 after Thriller. MJ just happened to be the first pop artist to have that type of success and why he is held in such high regard.

I'd have to disagree, Michael Jackson's success spanned decades, he fell out with his label in 2001 and went across cities doing speeches calling out his label so they refused to promote his last album, Invincible, which still went on to sell over 10 million copies, without any promotion or cooperation from the label. His last tour to be in 2009 was scheduled for 10 residency dates at the o2 Arena in London with an expected turnout of 200,000 people, the demand was so high they expanded it to 50 dates for over 1 million people and estimated they could easily sell out another 50. The demand for that tour was unprecedented and immense, nearly a decade after he released any albums. Radio stations fought over exclusives for his singles and actively seeked out leaks so they could play them before they came out, Scream is a good example of this where a radio stole a copy of the song and played it early so they could get the exclusive for it. His death was a breaking news moment that interrupted normal TV coverage for the entire day. There's hundreds more reasons why his starpower was so immense compared to every other performer. Gaga had a large amount of attention in 2009-2010 but it very quickly withered, she's still very popular but its an average amount of success. I'd still call her a superstar but definitely not in the likes of MJ. If Gaga took a 10 year break from releasing albums and announced a 50 date arena residency it would not sell even a couple dates probably.

If Gaga took a 10 year break from releasing albums and announced a 50 date arena residency it would not sell even a couple dates probably. To be fair, I don't think that MJ and Gaga are the best direct comparisons, my bad. Gaga and her career are much more comparable to Prince, and Beyonce to MJ. If Beyonce stopped touring for 10 years and then did a run at the O2 like that, we'd definitely see the same level of hype. She can surprise drop a guaranteed smash album, demand 15 minute performances at award shows and has done the Super Bowl halftime twice. To be clear, I am not comparing Beyonce in 2016 to MJ in 2009 or even 2001, when he was decades into his career and had long cemented his status as a legend. I mean that Beyonce now is as "big" as MJ was in 80s (and Gaga as big as Prince) and that decades from now, when she has been in the game as long as MJ was, she will likely be seen with the same status. The passage of time, as well as the death of an artist can really warp our perceptions of the past. If you talk to a lot of people who were fans of MJ in the 80s (and even read album reviews), his post Thriller output was seen as a huuge dissapointment/drop-off in quality, and that much of his success after 1982 was riding on the hype he had built before. I vividly remember the release of his 2001 album, and I can tell you his label wasn't the only issue. Let's not forget the man's image was severely tarnished in the early 90s. I guess my overall point is that we tend to romanticize past achievements and think it can never be topped by a contemporary artist. Success just looks different in different time periods, so we measure it by different standards (Instagram followers, etc) We have a completely altered media landscape, and the music business itself is in shambles, so it would be impossible to mimic 80s level record sales now, for any artist.
