I hate Ann Coulter just as much as the next guy, and I would hate for her to speak at my school, but when you make it a big deal you're just giving her power...

If you don't show up and you don't protest and you just let her speak for an hour and no one shows up or bats an eye, then she'll just go away.

Let her speak and pay no mind to her, THAT is how you stop someone like Ann Coulter. All she wants to do is see how mad she can get liberal, so don't give her the satisfaction.

Whenever I hear this type of defense on free speech from people including Bernie Sanders , I ask: 

Should public schools/any schools such as UC Berkeley host NAMBLA spokespersons then? How about members of white supremacist groups like the one supported for decades by Trump's top aide Sebastian Gorka, the Nazi-allied Vitezi Rend? Better yet, how about members of ISIS? Are they welcome to be hosted on by a public university for its students and community because #freespeech?

And yes, I would let them speak btw, as long as they're not advocating for violence in any way.

People have the right to offend you in America. Sorry if I just broke that news to you

In the real world, **** like this happens because people had the right to. Two weeks ago I walked to class with ppl yelling "f*ck trans people, gay people are going to burn in hell" across the street. I got over it. People have the right to be as*holes.

I really don't like her either but they should've just let her speak, although I identify as a liberal democrat, restricting Anne from speaking was a garbage thing to do. This whole fiasco is just getting her more promo than she would've originally got if she was allowed to speak in the first place. Democrats are hurting themselves by doing this, the same thing happened with that Milo guy and all that situation did was make everyone think Dems were unreasonable and not able to handle an opinion different than ours (even though their opinions are pure BS).

It's very lazy of you to think that this is about people getting 'offended'

And you do keep missing the important distinction that this is about a public university inviting and hosting a specific guest, not on a soapbox on some random street. 

Just as I wouldn't invite a pederasty enthusiast like Milo Y. to teach and discuss with my students why pedophilia is wrong (because Milo Y. offers no intellectual value or academic expertise in the field), an educator - like UC Berkeley - must and do exercise such choice, hundreds of times a day.

Nobody is saying Ann isn't free to hold her own rallies, stand on her own soapbox, and speak her mind. I live in NYC, where I hear crazy things every day from everyone, every minute. Ann is welcome to walk down on my street saying anything she wants, any time.

Free Speech doesn't mean anyone can say anything anywhere, at anytime. It just means that you are free to speak, without fear of being arrested. You can still be banned from speaking at an event, forum or on social media. You can be fired from your job, expelled from school, kicked off of a team. The government won't arrest you for your words, but that doesn't mean that you won't suffer consequences in the public and private sector for your words.

There are issues of public safety and institutions have a right to deny certain speech or speakers. Those issues are not protected under free speech. People often times confuse the definition of free speech.

If Berkeley wants to get federal money, they can pick and chose who gets to speak there based on what side of the political spectrum they're on. 

And this is a woman who has made millions just my voicing her political opinion, something that neither me nor you have been able to do. So I wouldn't say she has no value or nothing to say just because you disagree with her.
