The Cure Being Too Mainstream... Why Thats Non-Sense

As a pop top 40 lover I need to blow some steam off the comments Im hearing that "The Cure" is "too pop" or too "mainstream" etc

First of all. "Trendy" or "mainstream" songs or sounds simply means that its the MOST POPULAR genre/sound at the moment. It is NOT what determins whether a song has good quality or not!

A song can be mainstream and still have quality lyrics, a good structure and cohesion :applause:. On the otherhand a song can be really experiemental and still be completely tragic in all kinds of ways :duck:

Secondly Gaga has done so many things in her career that arent mainstream at all. Shes shown more versatility than just about any other pop star. But does she have to be experimental ALL the time? Is she not allowed to just make simple bops sometimes which have their place in music variety also???

Case closed 😑

I have always said this. A song can be mainstream and trendy and even generic but it can be a good song!

A lot of artists simply put out bad songs.

The Cure is trendy done RIGHT.

THANK YOU. The Cure is mainstream and it's GOOD MAINSTREAM. Radio needs this!  This has always been one of my favourite things about Gaga, she makes pop music that is never low brow. When she came out in 08, I remember thinking that Just Dance was the best pop hit I'd heard in forever. She knows how to do mainstream right, even if she doesn't always choose to do so.

I agree but would just add the lullaby verses of The Cure are unique, therefore not generic.

To people who mention Chainsmokers:

I think what makes Chainsmokers so generic and plain to me is how every song sounds the same instrumentally, and very predictable. The lyrics are meaningless and are manufactured to be relatable and sang by sometimes uncredited singers, totally autotuned/enhanced too, and every song is like that. They are just fake. And they act on top of the world for being fake. They don't personalize what they put out, they don't really care about what they put out. Their music may be catchy and feel-good, but at the end of the day their music is shallow... The Cure is not.

I would have never in a thought that I would enjoy a song with a tropical beat and snapping at the background, but Gaga proved me wrong. Like you mentioned having great lyrics/production is what makes a song a bop, not the fact that it's generic or not. Also, I feel like a song with an instrumental like "The Cure" shows off Gaga's vocals, and it's not ballad so the GP's eating it up, so it's a win win situation. I wouldn't mind if she releases an album with tropical beats, that's trap influenced, and that has a song featuring Ariana Grande because Gaga knows how to make everything work (and I also happen to think that Ariana's talented and that they'd make a great 2017ish R&B song together)

Edit:

Another thing, to the people comparing "The Cure" to The Chainsmokers, stop acting like they invented the current sound of pop music. They didn't. It was a combination of people being inspired by Lorde's "Pure Heroine" production (i.e. Selena Gomez's music), (not that Lorde invented that sound, but she did make it mainstream) and songs that he tropical beats when The Chainsmokers were still known for "Selfie".

It's well done and well written, so who cares.

Besides, if you take away the trendy breezy synth, the song sounds a lot like her early ballads. It's not like she's sold out or anything (if that can even be said of a popstar lol).

Also, people need to recognize the difference between "mainstream" (which The Cure purposefully is) and "generic" (which it arguably isn't).

Been a long time but I'm back in town, and this time I'm not leaving without you

I love PopGa for this reason. She takes the modern sound and artfully uses it for something worthy.

I think it's because Gaga just understands music so well.
