New York becomes first state to offer tuition-free college for middle class

Personally, I have a problem with this. As a tax paying, NY citizen, we pay some of the highest taxes in the country. I don't want to pay for others  college, thats not my problem. Instead lower taxes so businesses and people don't leave this tax robbing state.

Not to mention, making university free would mean an increase in the number of people going to university and therefore mean an increase in the number of graduates per year. The graduate job market is packed enough as it is, all free tuition would do is leave more graduates without a graduate level job.

My opinion is swayed since I live in England though. Our tuition fees are capped at £9,000 per year and we only need to repay it if we earn more than £21,000 per year. Even then, the percentage deducted from your salary is negligible. This means that everyone in England can afford to go to university, regardless of their socio-economic background.

As for 'beneficial', I'm sure you can imagine there are a number of economic benefits if people pay for tuition versus if they do not.

I think giving everyone the same opportunity is more fair tbh, some people can't afford to go to school. Many people end up in debt for years in America. Giving them the chance to avoid that is very fair. 

As far as someone else paying for that, you could say that going to high school greatly increases the chance of getting hired, why should somebody else pay for that? Because that's what society does. We pay taxes and then the government does stuff with those taxes to benefit the populace.

The more graduates without jobs is valid but as the economy changes, I'm hopeful that more of those jobs will appear.

Besides paying less taxes, I don't see any economic benefit to people paying for college. Hell, when people are in thousands of dollars of debt, they're less likely to put money into the economy.

Why should you have to pay if the state can take care of it? If a state can't afford to give it for free then that's one thing but why should we force people to struggle unnecessarily? Because of the principle of paying for what you get? I don't buy that principle. 

High School is not needed to not walk around like an idiot. By then you've already learned how to read, write, do math and have learned about both US And world history. It is not necessary.

People won't be leaving now. In fact, free college will likely attract people to our state. And after they get there free college, they have to stay or else they have to pay the state back. 

But fine, u don't have to like it. Since I'll now be going to college for free, I'm pretty damn excited about this. So are all my other high school friends.

Every single year I give this NY government so much money, they have basically the highest taxes in the country, they do nothing for me except rob me of my money and now I find out it is going to pay for peoples college tuition? NY is sort of becoming a joke to a tax paying citizen, lower taxes Governor Cuomo so people and businesses stop leaving because they can't afford your taxes, wages, and high regulations plus fees.

Omg I know right?!? When I was at NYU even with financial aid it was still a struggle. My dad and oldest sister helped with what they could but it wasn't much. I wonder if you're still considered a resident if you were born there but then moved.

Of course I think it's disgusting that people paid before. 

But this is, unfortunately, how progress works. It's not my fault that you were born too early. If we didn't update society because people it'd be unfair for people who were born too early to benefit, then we'd never progress.

Is it just up to an income cap? Do other things come into play, such as number of children in a household, etc? Just curious cause I assume if the cap is $100K and a household with one child makes $97K a year and a household with four children makes $102K a year that the latter is just as deserving as the former in terms of receiving free tuition. 

Interesting to see how this pans out. So much money goes to taxes, so it's refreshing to see it used to better the community.

I know, this whole thing is ridiculous. I can't believe this actually passed. In NY we pay so much tax. Businesses have regulation after regulation and fees you wouldn't believe. A lot of people are moving to Florida because it has lower taxes. Cuomo should lower taxes instead. I can't believe I am paying for peoples colleges I don't even know, the government does nothing for me and now I have to do something for strangers I don't even know and I have no choice? I am so mad at this law.

You do realize that as time goes one eventually no one will have lived when illegals wasn't free, right? That's how progress works. Some people are born too early to enjoy, that's sad I agree but that's life. 

But in the end, whether you think they should or shouldn't have to pay, they will. And I will go for free. Because in the words of conservative assholes last November "We Won snowflakes!"

If it makes you feel better, the budget also includes an income tax cut for people that make less then 300k.
