Too bad some SJWs fans boycotting it, they missed so much.

This films is the best Manga/anime based Hollywood films that were actually handled with care, stay true to the canon plotline, and not a B-movie with shxtty actors and plots and VFX for years to come.

As a fan myself, I am so glad I am witnessing this live action in a cinema. It was a treat!

It really is a shame. I personally loved this movie, which is an unpopular opinion among many people lol. I think it was clever how they did link the anime to this one.

They're robots, so they're raceless in a sense, but i can see why people are getting a tad touchy over the subject of whitewashing. However, they didn't even keep ScarJo as Motoko, but a new form of her which i thought was a really clever link. At least when it had the scene with the actual Motoko, they had cast an Asian girl.

Again, i loved this movie and i also love the anime (it's one of my all time favorites), so it's a shame it's flopping and getting bad reviews but, to each their own.

Not surprised...marketing was bad, the whitewashing was real, the story and history of the film was unfamiliar to an American audience, but even the asian market didn't care for it especially not having an asian female lead.

Overall, Hollywood never learns that whitewashing and bad marketing won't make a hit movie just because you have an A-list actor

:smh:

This tea. And I really wonder how directors and the people working on the film thought it would be a good idea to approach the whitewashing stuff in the manner that they did in the film :madge: it was really cringey and uncomfortable, especially when you could tell it was written into the script in lieu of those allegations :toofunny:

A whitewashed flop. All is as it should be.

It's interesting to see two fans of the original work who also liked the movie! Most I've seen disliked it or felt neutral about it (that it was shallow or uneventful). But good for some fans enjoying it, im glad they got to see an adaptation they liked!

doppelganger

Visually it is stunning, until you realise that the production design is basically a scrubbed down Blade Runner.

I did enjoy the movie, it's not as bad as most Hollywood action films but hardly imaginative or of the moment

I just hope more movies with cyberpunk settings get made tbh.

I just don't get the whole appeal of live-actions versions of anime. Why not just... you know, make an animated film?

I heard they're going to live-adapt Akira soon.... sigh

Akira is going to be a disaster I think. The whole "schtick" with the movie was the visual appeal and how it was visually beautiful and intricate and detailed for an animated film. I don't think a live action version would translate well at all.

In general I think most anime doesn't need a live action adaptation. It's already a niche subgroup of animation; there's no need to go all out and try to dumb down the source material to appeal to a wider audience that wouldn't be "here for it" already.

The storyline is kinda blahh

But visually stunning

The action not that great either

The storyline felt emotionless to me  there were so many scenes where an emotional moment could happen (even the twist that I wasn't a fan of could of been an impressive moment of genuine shock and emotion) but it just...felt flat. Idk. It was weird.

Phlop

I haven't seen it yet but the promotion for it was messy. I totally didn't realize that movie was coming out until 2 weeks before. Other movies released this month had months of hype (B&B, PowerRangers, BossBaby, etc).

Also in its planning stages it got a lot of bad press for the whitewashing. It should have had an Asian cast because then it would've been more supported by ethnic groups, the anime community and would have gotten a nod from Hollywood. If any movie were to break that mold, it should have been this one.
