StrawberryBlond 14,255
While I do agree this is a last ditch (and rather desperate, based on who Shakira has been rumored to be working with for her album) attempt for US success I don't really agree with the rest of your post. Yes Shakira is older but that hasn't hindered her performing abilities or her looks. Also, as we can see with Beyonce & Madonna's Ray of Light a child can be a very good thing for the performer. And after HDL she enjoyed great success beyond Spanish speaking territories, lol. She's also like, one of the biggest foreign artists in France? Shakira does amazing in continental Europe. No, she's still a great performer and gorgeous, but society is very ageist when it comes to female artists. It's like they won't give the time of day to a female artist over 30. Well, technically, Beyonce didn't give birth until after 4's release, but that album was the lowest point in her career and I guess some people consider her new album to be her first post-birth, but come on, it's doing well in sales, but the singles don't stand a chance because of the way she released it. And yes, Madonna had one of her biggest eras after having a child, but she's literally the only one I can think of who succeeded post-birth. Britney's career downfall started when she had kids, as did Xtina's. Celine Dion, J.Lo and Pink continued to have moderate success and even new career peaks, but nowhere near the level of success that they had back in the day. It's like, as soon as a pop star becomes a mother, the world doesn't want them to be remotely provocative anymore, and as that's what a lot of pop music is about, careers start failing. Yes, I know she's had success in non-Spanish speaking countries since Hips Don't Lie, but outwith Waka Waka (which only was so successful as it was the World Cup anthem) and Beautiful Liar (which was only successful as it involved Beyonce), she has barely made a dent in English speaking countries, and that's where the biggest markets are for a lot of artists. This is why foreign artists learn English, because that's where the money is. She has released six singles since Waka Waka and not one of them charted in the UK. Her last top ten hit in the US was Beautiful Liar in 2007. Going back to Spanish sent her straight to irrelevancy in the English speaking world. Yes, she does have support in continental Europe, but it's nowhere near the kind that she has in Latin America. I noticed that on her last tour, as it supported a Spanish album, about 90% of those North American tour dates were in states with a large Hispanic commuity (New York, Florida, Texas, Nevada, California) and just a handful of dates outwith these states. And of course, when she goes to Europe, she goes to town with touring all over Spain. She knows her audience well, but she's been limiting herself for too long. She hasn't released an album in 3 and a half years and her last English album was 4 and a half years ago and was a big flop. The public moves on fast. Smooth Criminal 2
So I've been listening to a lot of Rihanna today....and I must say, she has such an impressive discography! All of her songs are pure pop gems! She has scored 13 No. 1s and so many other Top 10 hits. And it wouldn't be false to say that she has some of the most biggest/famous songs of the past few years. Do you think her songs will stand the test of time?
No Angel 128
Yes. A few of her #1s are quite memorable while the others aren't. (What can I say? She's got too many hits, I can't even remember! Lol) So I'm gonna say yes. In my opinion, Umbrella will remain her signature track though. We Found Love is a great song too, but Umbrella was a craze, and rightfully so. It was a great track. Cas Winchester 195
Umbrella will. I don't know bout the others. Maybe We found Love?
Gov Hooka 8,008
Tbqh they will as much as Gaga's. We Found Love, Only Girl, SOS, Umbrella, Disturbia, S&M, Diamonds. She really does have a solid collection of hits. All of these are still played on the radio/instantly recognized by many, and some, Umbrella, We Found Love and Disturbia, will probably continue to be recognized in the far future.
