This is a last ditch attempt to make Shakira big in the US again (and worldwide), but I doubt it's going to work beyond one successful single. Shakira's too old by music industry standards to make it in today's world of pop girls and she's a mother now too, which always causes a sales downfall in female artists, for some reason. Shakira just disappeared too far into into Spanish speaking territory after Hips Don't Lie, which was a really bad move as it alienated the rest of the world. It means she still has a loyal Latin fanbase but elsewhere, not so much. I just hope she doesn't full on sell out in the hopes of being successful again. Seeing her degrade herself with the She Wolf video was sad to watch and the whole electro thing just doesn't suit her.

And can Rihanna just clear off properly? Just for a while? It was awesome not seeing her on X Factor UK last year for once and no annual album, but she needs a proper break from the public eye. Even when she's on a break, she's still kept firmly in the public sphere with the likes of The Monster and now teaming up with Shakira. It's beyond my comprehension why the public are not completely sick of her. Sure, you can say it's because she's a singles artist that's very public friendly, but generic singles artists who won't go away are like bothersome flies!

While I do agree this is a last ditch (and rather desperate, based on who Shakira has been rumored to be working with for her album) attempt for US success I don't really agree with the rest of your post.

Yes Shakira is older but that hasn't hindered her performing abilities or her looks. Also, as we can see with Beyonce & Madonna's Ray of Light a child can be a very good thing for the performer. And after HDL she enjoyed great success beyond Spanish speaking territories, lol. She's also like, one of the biggest foreign artists in France? Shakira does amazing in continental Europe.
