I don't find her interesting at all. Her streaming power is good though I heard? If so, streaming has officially killed buying music tbh

Like some people said, she is big in Europe.

Her songs are on the radio 24/7

Once I was driving and Ain't my fault was played and hour later on my way to home they played it again :air:

Her label is trying SO HARD to push her in America. And they could MILK Europe SO GOOD but they are dumb af.

The same happened with Lana Del Rey but when Interscope saw that she is doing good here they pushed her even more. I think that they could release every song from Born To Die as single and make music video for it and it would be successful...

America caught up later...

I get the fact that new artists really have to stick around for a while before releasing an album to ensure they build a fanbase who will buy it, but Zara's management did it all wrong. Instead of putting all these songs she's been releasing on an EP and then releasing the album with one or two singles preceding it, they decided to launch her as a purely singles artist in 2015 and not put her first album out until 2017. Stupid move. In the old days, you could have an artist circulating the charts with a bunch of singles in order to garner a fanbase and then put the album out a year later, but not anymore. Nowadays, you have to be quicker with album releases. Most artists drop a single and then the album appears a month later or so. Even the big names are doing that. They know that the public's attention span is so low that taking months and months to bring out an album post-lead single just makes people grow sick of waiting and lose interest.

Plus, Zara really hasn't been promoted enough to make people truly care about her. She doesn't have a unique look or sound, she's a dime a dozen in every way. I wish the industry would stop signing people like this or at least, sign them and nurture them until they can make an album that is actually worth a listen.

So true, look at Calvin Harris. He makes generic music and his singles sell but his 18 Months album is the only one that's truly sold well and there's still no sign of his new album despite the 'lead' single (whether you consider that to be How Deep Is Your Love or This Is What You Came For) being released over a year ago and all the songs since being minor hits or completely flopping. The public tend to pass on buying an album full of generic songs that have already been hits. If you're going to release 5 singles before the album and they're all hits to some degree, what's the point in buying the entire thing? You'd be better off just streaming it, not paying for it.

And yeah, Zara has proven to be a bit nutty. She said some stuff about how she hates men, that it doesn't hurt men if she hates them and that man hating is her hobby. And she said it all while claiming to be a feminist. Stuff like that is seriously bad for the image of an artist who's trying to make a name for themselves, putting men and women off her. It officially ensured that I have no time for her.

Rita Ora's debut springs to mind as well. She received a ton of exposure heading into her album release, and though it went #1 it didn't exactly have the impact one might have expected. And it amounted to basically nothing since.

I hate to sound condescending because she's only a few years younger than me but I think her young age combined with the added pressure of being put in the spotlight and therefore the possible pressure to be "outspoken" is reason for all that. The man hating stuff doesn't make any sense. She has pretty much point blank said "I hate men", yet as far as I can see it's mostly men that are responsible for the creation of her album. Just annoying. She clearly needs time to adjust to being famous and growing up at the same time.

Oh, yeah, that too. For all the #1's that she got, very few actually bought the album. It was constantly being put on a special deal to encourage sales. I remember seeing it in a 2 for £10 deal in HMV three months after its release and being advertised as a part of a £4.99 itunes deal multiple times. And unsurprisingly, when these offers were on was the only time that the album suddenly improved considerably on the charts. But then the public released she was all hype and weren't interested. Same with the likes of Jessie J. She's another one who became so irrelevant in such a short space of time. And Cheryl Cole. Yet she holds the record for the most UK #1's by a UK female artist. And before her, the joint record holders were Rita Ora and Geri Halliwell. Looking at the statistics like that, it's no wonder that some people think the charts are completely meaningless. Who remembers any song from these artists except their hardcore fans?

Yes, I think she's maybe a bit too young for fame. Some people can handle it, some can't. Though I don't know if, at 19, her age can be used as that much of an excuse. You're educated about how bad hate speech is at school, which she can't have left that long ago. Bet her label gave her the hairdryer treatment after she said those pearls of wisdom. But indeed, young stars are encouraged to make a name for themselves by being controversial, outspoken, different. There's a reason so many new artists that started out in 2010 and onwards have 'claimed' to be bisexual. Nicki and Jessie actually admitted that they exaggerated it (and maybe even borderline lied) just to get noticed so it makes me wonder how many others are genuine.

She's pretty big in Europe, I don't know about her recent sales, but since Lush Life she's had few  hits in a row, I Would Like, Never Forget You, This One's For You, Girls Like and Symphony. Just because she's not successful in the US it doesn't mean her career is over

Well, I'm speaking from a German point of view - and the people here have an awful taste when it comes to charts, haha!

That's interesting to know!
