The Pentagon has never been audited. That's astonishing.

the DoD has never had an audit, something every American person, every company and every other government agency is subject to. The result is an astounding $10tn in taxpayer money that has gone unaccounted for since 1996.

Legislation in the early 1990s demanded that all government agencies had annual audits, but the Pentagon has exempted itself without consequence for 20 years now, telling the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that collecting and organizing the required information for a full audit is too costly and time-consuming.

In the meantime, the GAO and Office of the Inspector General (IG) have published an endless stream of reports documenting financial mismanagement: $500m in aid to Yemen lost here, $5.8bn in supplies lost there, $8,000 spent on helicopter gears that really cost $500.

America has a very odd complex relationship with our armed services and the DoD. It's actually not surprising, considering any move to demand audits would incite "unamerican" shaming. "How can you demand these people to work harder for you when they're already fighting for your freedom?" and similar rhetoric would be rampant. Until we can have bipartisan support, it will stay an issue.

Yeah, it's pretty pathetic that we've reached a point in America where the military is above criticism.  Especially when our military isn't even really used to defend us from anything all that often.

He has so far refused to rule out a run multiple times and he said it isn't time yet to talk about it. So I think he's definitely at least thinking about it,

I think what current Americans aren't really understanding/remembering/realizing is: government intelligence agencies are not to be accounted for. Rarely in their time, has the pentagon, CIA, FBI, or NSA ever been held accountable for things, because there is a very careful balance between, protecting the country from outside, internal, and future threats, and breaking the law. The three branches of the governement, have all, historically and rightfully so, been wary of these agencies, because all politicians and governmental forces usually have some skeleton or other in their closet and these agencies are the ones that hold those skeletons ransom against legal and auditorial action.

They are the ones that put the fear in our unlawful government practices and foreign powers. They work in the shadow as they always have, and will continue to do until they so choose otherwise. And finally, their practices are not fully, and never fully will be known, because that isn't how the relationship works.
