Perry’s a pop superstar, but as a lyricist she isn’t exactly Bob Dylan. (The bridge of one of her hits: “Boom, boom, boom / Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon / It’s always been inside of you, you, you / And now it’s time to let it through.”) --- Perry, then, is neither original nor creative with her artistry. As The Atlantic’s Spencer Kornhaber wrote, “Perry’s solution is to make music as perky as ever, and videos as cheeky-cute as ever, but to ladle in some malaise.” Basically, feel bad about feeling good. --- There’s a substantiveness to the concerns of Black Lives Matter that Perry’s “malaise” can’t match, and a thoughtfulness to the Bouncing Souls’ rage against the spiritual emptiness of techno-utopian consumerism that Perry doesn’t offer. A protest album is a huge risk and with that risk, you gotta bring it. My level of taste in music is not comparable to most so I just may view this topic through a different lense.
