Not saying gaga is the only one though, just saying it's strange that she's getting the award as I personally can't really think of anything she's done besides firework being relateable? This isn't shade, but can you show me what other advocating she's done? I'm legit curious to see

Many other artists out there who were more actively advocating about LGBTQ rights and equality who deserve this award better. If only one song is what it takes for someone to be awarded, when some other people literally dedicates their time and life for the greater good, then Lord help us. Seriously though, 2 hours ago, Harry said: Well many people have said nice things but it doesn't mean they deserve awards meant to recognise outspoken advocates. It's out of the blue simply because there are probably hundreds (maybe thousands) of people who deserve this award above her. The general sentiment of Firework is nice and all but it's not even really specific to anyone, let alone the LGBT community. If one song that could vaguely be applied to the struggles of queer people makes her deserving of an LGBT advocate award, well... I must be going crazy I can't think of one instance of her doing anything for us. 1 hour ago, Hecturr said: Not saying she's done nothing, but there are 100% more deserving people than her. I'm legit curious to see I don't disagree that there are people out there that have done more But then for me personally I think that comes down to the people's fault who've chosen and it's not a bad mark on Katy Perry. Like instead of it being like "Katy shouldn't have this award" it should be about "X, Y, and Z people should have this award too" - if I'm making sense As in this shouldn't be about tearing down Katy Perry for not doing stuff for the LGBT community, it should be about elevating those who have done more and hoping that they get recognition. I'm not the most clued in about everything she's done but there are quite a few nice ones out there: http://www.advocate.com/politics/2014/02/03/watch-katy-perry-and-madonna-stand-lgbt-russians-gaypropaganda http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/trevor-live-katy-perry-presented-397407 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/15/katy-perry-australian-gay-marriage_n_3763837.html 2 hours ago, nikola said: ummmm NO How the **** did she win this award.........like what Your post literally doesn't say or do anything towards the discussion

It's not a bad mark on Katy - she didn't choose to receive the award. It's how I feel about situations at the Grammys, too. But in that instance I think it's nice when the recipient acknowledges they arguably weren't the most deserving and it would be cool to see Katy do something similar, or at least try to step up her activism if this award means anything to her. I like ya man but the 'deserving' thing makes it sound like some sort of competition. She's doing some good in the world and others are too. That's a positive thing no matter which way you cut it The award and this entire 'she's not worthy' thing is unnecessary imo. Poor Katy can't catch a break. She tried to have more depth in her music and show more activism but she just can't win tbh The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

Bear 7,515
I don't really get what she's actively done. She is supportive towards LGBT like millions of people are, but has she actually gone out of her way to do anything? They seem to award it because she has a platform, but IMO it's the people who don't have fame and yet work everyday for LGBT rights that deserve the recognition. It takes no effort or consequence for Katy to tweet some support or appear as a guest for some LGBT related event, but there are people out there who give everything including their lives to defend their right to be who they are. It's not a criticism of Katy, she has done nothing wrong (related to this anyway ) , and on the contrary has helped people with her uplifting music. I just think there are better people who put their all in that could be awarded instead . It's not my award to give though, so I respect their decision and congratulations to Katy. (and no I don't mean Gaga either, even if she is more involved than Katy. I mean the people who fight for LGBT rights full time, and whose lives are often made hard because of it.) Poor Katy can't catch a break. She tried to have more depth in her music and show more activism but she just can't win tbh Sure, maybe deserving is the wrong word in this particular instance. You're right, this isn't the Oscars or whatever. But it does feel like a major oversight to award someone with a very minimal impact on this particular community when there are people who have more or less dedicated their entire careers to it. I just think that it's really that simple. I kind of think that awards like this are dumb anyway, but their chosen recipient basically doesn't fit the criteria of the award that they created. As I said to Haroon, it's not her decision to be "honoured" for this so it's not about criticising her or her lack of LGBT activism (at least for me), it's just pointing out a seemingly random decision. She's been more vocal and political as of late so there's certainly props to be given there, but not in this particular field. I don't think there's anything wrong or inaccurate in saying that
