Country Stars & Politics

I honestly, enjoyed this read from Buzzfeed.

It basically describes the political climate among country stars.

It makes a point to share that the old stereotype of country artists being conservatives actually isn't true anymore.

It says that the younger crowd has brought change to the industry and allows country artists to express more liberal views.

New country artists like Sturgill Simpson and Maren Morris have prominently expressed their more liberal views. These two artists are actually the top new country artists in the game, each winning a Grammy last month. Perhaps, a foreshadowing of the future of the genre.

This is Sturgill's anti-Trump music video from last month, after winning his Grammy for Best Country Album

But there are still conservative artists like Toby Keith.

The issue that is most prominent in the country political climate is the amount of country artists who won't comment on politics. The reason is related to the backlash that the Dixie Chicks received after their anti-Bush rant in 2003. Insiders say country artists saw that reaction and it was a lesson to them not to speak out. Insiders say there are many liberal country artists in the game, but they don't want to risk their careers by speaking out.

I have a new respect for Sturgill tbh. Anyways yeah I love country so it's disheartening to see so many of them keep quiet. Poor kacey Musgraves has been like ostracized from country after her song Follow Your Arrow. I'm secretly hoping Sam Hunt will pull a big political thing with a future album. I also want a big name country star to come out and make the conservatives SHOOK
